Design and Ideas
The aim was the build a big 3d printer, then I thought that if made the frame strong enough it could do light CNC milling of acrylic and wood. And then I saw a DIY CNC plasma cutter and thought that was cool so now the aim of this machine is the be able to do all 3.
Its frame is made of 20x20mm aluminium extrusions. It will use 20mm rods with LM20UU bearings. The fame will be simular to what is shown below except there will be 2 rods on each side for the Z axis.
The 3d printer arraignment for the build will use a piece of 10mm wood for the y axis base with a Mk3 heatbed attached. The extruder will be a Mk8 extruder.
The mill attachment will use a dremel flexishaft as the tool head.
The plasma cutter head would be a from a ROSSI Cut-40.
Build Progress
So far the aluminium extrusions have been assembled as shown. I used https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:59398 to connect the extrusions together. It was very fiddely with each piece being interconnected. I used M5x10mm bolts and M5 nuts for half of the brackets and I used M4 Slim T-Nuts and their M4x10mm hex screws from Core Electronics for the remainder of the brackets.
Designed Motor mounts. http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:890083
Printed Motor mounts and attached them.
Added the 20mm rods.
3 Axis MultiTool - 3D printer, CNC Mill and Plasma Cutter
Build in 'Cartesian Style CNC' published by Cameron1995, Jun 25, 2015.
So in short this build is a work in progress; it aims to make a large 3d printer, medium size CNC mill and a small plasma cutter all in one CNC unit.
