Reach out to sales maybe. I know folks have got custom extrusion lengths before, so they may be able to help you. OpenBuilds Sales Team

Does anyone know if the Easter Egg for the Ghost case is still active?

Before you get your hopes too high for a super-spiffy all-WhiteBox, I discovered with mine that the more recent board revisions don't fit the ghost case parts quite as well as the original release presumably did (close, but not quite). You may still be able to make it work - I don't remember the details - but I think some of the LEDs and maybe an I/O port or two were moved away from their ghostly cutouts. I ended up compromising and making mine a BlackAndWhiteBox, which still turned out fairly spiffy.

Then again, I also put the assembly diagram on the outside, so maybe mine's not the best example to follow :p

(besides, who ever heard of an all-white Easter egg?)

    Hi,

I received my BlackBox last week and to my surprise it was completely assembled.

I was curious as to what the default stepper and limit switch jumpers are set at. (so I don’t have to open it)

I also have steppers rated at 2.8A if you can give me a clock setting on the adjustment that is close/ < than that I would appreciate it.

    Thank You

    Ray

Default current setting should do fine to get going. Microstepping is set to 1/8th (best torque)

Refer to docs.openbuilds.com for more info

    Thank You

    Are the Limit sw. default 5v? or 24V? I need 5v , 2 wire.
It's not in the doc as far as I can tell. Read the whole thing and all the posts on here before I ordered it.
I've had this CNC for 3 years and the only problems I had were connection oxidation because of the environment it's in.
It gets damp in my shed and the connections become intermittent causing grief. I was using an Arduino w Shield and DRV8825's.
Machined aluminum gears to fix a 1938 Craftsman Table saw.
That was done on a Custom Cbeam.....

Thank You, Lots of trial and error with Fusion 360 and wooden prototyping.

OK, I saw that doc. So I guess I have to open it up and look at the jumper.
No prob, I get it going.
I already loaded my custom settings so now it's connection time.
Thank you so much for your prompt response on a Sunday no less.

Shorted wiring usually: docs:blackbox:faq-usb-connection-failed [OpenBuilds Documentation] in particular if V+ got shorted to GND. Sometimes temporary brownout, but could also induce damaging transients into the V+ rail.

Disconnected all but usb, same thing, firmware gone. I did the same on a different PC, firmware gone.
Drivers present and enabled on both PC's
Red USB led flashes upon connection.
When it was connecting, the GRBL settings would revert back to defaults by itself, sometimes it would jog and sometimes no movement. I would invert the direction and it would go back to default without a disconnect or reset.
I can understand how a shorted Vref can put it to sleep but it shouldn't wipe the firmware. It should recover once the short is gone.
That's the way they do it in automotive Modules anyway.
Flash Failed with only USB connected.

Except if the short was brief, or opened up with power still applied, in which case the switchmode converter could try compensating for the excessive current draw, increasing output, which could result in overshoot voltage that might have damaged the MCU. Even in automotive setups its advisable to perform connections with the power (battery) disconnected for the same reasons

From your diagnostics it seems it is beyond recovery. You can check in with Contact Us Form about ordering a replacement Brains board, should only be that part that got damaged. They will be able to assist forward

Finally completed the assembly of my LEAD1010. In testing the motors, I ran into an issue with the X Axis motor. It seems to stutter and not move appropriately. I verified the wiring as the first step, and also tested with a motor cable direct from the Blackbox to the Motor, away from any other cable paths before removing the motor from the machine. I removed the motor from the assembly and connected it to the Black Box controller with the short cable so I could test it in a no-load situation. With only this motor and cable connected, I can connect it to the Z, Y1, and Y2 driver outputs of the Blackbox, and it behaves as expected. When I connect it back to the X driver output, I get the same result with the stutter and incomplete move as I did when it was mounted to the machine.

I suspect I have a bad X driver circuit in my Blackbox. I purchased the LEAD in Nov 2018, and the Blackbox in June 2019. Looking for suggestions or other troubleshooting things to try.

I'm a bit of Newbie round here and am about to build an Acro system
I have purchased all the parts separately and have currently got a 12v/29A power supply from openbuilds to power the Blackbox
    Is this right??

I think the Black Box is a 24 volt system. The steppers will be happier with higher voltage too.

Hi Peter, thanks so much for your confirmation, do you think that a hybrid NEMA23 2.8A 18kg/cm would be a better choice? im planning on cutting wood and aluminium and i dont want to be short on power, but as i said im new to this world and im not sure if going for the NEMA23 28.5kg/cm 4.2A would be too ambiciuos. your help on this last confirmation would be gratly appreciated since im about to buy this blackbox

Depends on its actual torque curve. Best option I would say go for the already Proven NEMA 23 Stepper Motor - High Torque Series - optimally matched on all parameters for you (inductance, current rateing, coil voltages, coil resistance etc) - we did all the trial and error so you don't have to

I have a black box controlling standard nemo motors. I would like to swap out the motors for closed loop motors. Would I be able to use the black box to control external closed loop drivers / motors? If so how would I go about doing this?

    thx
    Doug

BlackBox does not support external drivers with ease, as it is designed around being an enclosed easy to use fully integrated system.

I finally guessed the secret and when I entered it congratulated me. Once I entered my contact info in, it told me there are no more codes. Is it now over in September?
