OpenBuilds LEAD CNC

    I see that the store is offering nuts and trust bearings to be able to tension the lead screws. I wonder about if my screws need to be longer to do this? Would like to know more about this method.

    If you reverse the end caps and recess the bearings, with a spacer washer at each end you’ll have about 7mm each end which is a bit shy on flex connector end for a good grip. On a similar build I just shortened the extrusions 5mm to accommodate.

    Is the washer necessary for this kind of bearing?

    The washer provides a gap so the flex coupling doesn’t rub the end plate.

    Did putting these in tension do away with the wiping issue at 1500 mm?

    I see! Would the 688 bearing still be necessary to keep the lead screw centered within the plate's hole? I don't think so, at least on the motor side of things, because the short distance from the plate to the motor would keep it within the opening in the plate.

    So far, anyway, I have it installed like in this photos. Still haven't flipped the plates, hence my confussion about keeping or ditching the 688 bearings and/or the real need for washers. Probably once I flip the plates the thrust bearings would be recessed inside the plate...

    Why wouldn't the bearing go in the end cap and the spacer between the bearing and couple?

    That's exactly how it goes. There is one more nuance you need to be aware of though. On the thrust bearings one of the face washers has a slightly larger hole than the other. The one with the larger hole is dropped first into the bearing recess in the end plate. The smaller holed washer always goes toward the nut or coupler as it turns with the screw so the fact that it may be tight on the screw doesn't matter.

    In order to put the lead screw in tension don't I need to have the nuts on both ends. Or is there not room on the stepper motor end?

    Realistically you’re only looking at a couple pounds of tension. The flex coupler can handle that as the stop at one end. If you want to go higher you’ll need nuts at both ends in which case you may need to add additional spacers on the motor mount. But overall I’m not sure how much force those bearings can handle so don’t set yourself up for disappointment by expecting a lot out of them.

    To put it into context, when applying compression to a leadscrew we use one turn of an M5 screw to apply the force - 0.8mm of movement (the workbee from Ooznest used to use compression by loosening the screws holding the end plates by one turn, tightening the lock collars and then re-tightening the end plate screws)

    Has anyone extended the Y axis on their 1010? Is it possible to extend and keep the screw driven or would I need to change to linear rails?

    You should be able to extend, but you will need a longer acme screw. Many people have used the 1/2"-10 5 start screw from McMaster Carr. There are 1/2"-10 five start delrin nut blocks on ebay. They should fit in the existing Cbeam channel, but you may need to make other modifications. My Y axis is 1500 mm long and I use those 1/2-10 acme screws and have no issue with the screws whipping at high speeds.

    Hi Open Builds,

    I have a full version of Enroute, can I G code to my 1000x1500mm lead machine? I have just installed open builds power supply and black box and is ready to do tests on Y&X, My spindle is not fitted so would just like to send some file as dry run at this stage.

    I see in the parts store that you can get a 1540mm acme screw that is 8mm in diameter. I wouldn't have to change any other parts since the one I have now is 8mm and 1040mm in length.

    How is the whip with a lead screw of that length? Would this Tension Nut solve any whipping issues?

    That must be new, or i have just not noticed it. I wonder if that is because you can now put the screws in tension with the addition of the thrust bearings. At that length, it is a must with than small screw diameter - in my opinion. Personally I have the 1/2 inch screws in mine in tension to prevent whipping.

    Everything I have is set up for 8mm lead screws so if I could stay with that size it would be much more cost and labor effective. So I might try extending and add the tension nut and see what happens. I'm hoping someone on here might be able to verify that the tension nut will help with the whipping on a 1500mm lead screw.

    We tested the 1500mm/8mm + our tension setup extensively. No whipping :)

    Does the mm-1000 spindle by stepcraft work on a lead cnc? It is a 1000 watt spindle. Seems to not be loud and only weighs 4 lbs (or something close). It seems like a good spindle option but I don’t know if it would work with an open builds system. Anyone have any knowledge on this?

    You would have to figure out the pin-out of the plug. It says it comes with a 1/8 inch collet. For that price it should include a set of collets. Personally I avoid 1/8 inch endmills as much as possible due to deflection. There are much cheaper spindles that come with an ER collet system in that watt range but the Stepcraft appears that it may be a better choice EMI wise. It also looks to be an easier hookup too if you make a connector after you figure the pin-out if the plug. Can it use larger collets?

    Hey guys! Started to build my lead 100x100 cm machine. Getting to the end of the build but Ive encountered this issue today. The gantries moving on the Y axis doesnt seem to hit the end at the same time.

    The gantry on the left c-beam could still go 5mm till hitting the corner brackets, while the right gantry hits it already, while the machine has an opposite issue when going to the back, the left gantry hits the end of the c-beam while the right one could still go those 5mm.

    I started to think there might be issues with the machine not being square, but Ive checked that with a 50cm square and both the base, and the C-beams seem to be square with each other. Measured all the beams for any errors with cutting but they also seem to be perfectly even.
    Any idea what could be the reason for this? Is it actually an issue or it will disappear when I mount the Y-axis lead screws?

    Measure corner to corner with a tape measure. If they both match, you are square. I bet one will be longer. I have a square that, well, is almost perfectly square. But it isn't perfectly square. Actually none of my framing squares are "perfect" either. Unless your square cost a fortune, it may not be either.
