Nema 23 Belt and Pinion System

    I just thought, if you attach a saw blade to the aluminium and hold the motor somehow, Ta-da!! :thumbsup::D :jawdrop:

    Hi Mark,
    A newcomer to cnc machining here.

    I have a Lowrider2, and it is OK, but not very rigid. I would like to build something that is rigid but can handle full sheets of plywood (2480 x 1220) That is a big machine, but it seems to me that my limitation is only the X-axis.

    Question #1:
    Can one join C-channels? Sure, I know that the join will never be perfect, but for my purposes (plywood) a minor bump might be acceptable.

    Question #2:
    While your belt and pinion actuator is exactly what I'm looking for, I'm struggling to understand how to attach the Y-Z gantry (I refer to the short side as the Y-axis). I assume there are plates to attach the Y-axis C-channel to the system you have described?

    There are a couple of builds recently where people joined extrusions to make CCN routers for cutting full sheets of plywood. Here is one. Openbuilds 4x8 cnc

    Personally, if it were me I would do a double belted system where a piece of belt is glued into the channel of the extrusion and the belt that moves the gantry is pressed down into that belt so it acts like a rack and pinion system. This should help alleviate belt stretch and some backlash.

    The convention is that X0 and Y0 is at the bottom left of the machine where X goes left and right and Y goes forward and back. I would recommend that you make the Y axis the static one and the X axis the moving one.
    If I misunderstood what you've meant with "limitation is only the X-axis" than disregard my above runt. :D
