Just ran the "Hello World" file and the cut out looks real nice. I have been thinking of transferring pictures to wood for my daughters. It looks as though that can be done with Vcarve desktop. Is that a good way to go for this type of job? Thanks

Thanks Pete. I think I will play around with this thing to get more familiar with it and maybe get that additional software.

I have not done the photo Vcarve yet, but after watching a couple of videos, I can generate tool paths for 3D models to be cut with my lathe in just a few minutes. I am very impressed with Vcare Desktop so far. I kind of wish I would have gotten Aspire, but I just can't justify it yet.

I've made some Lithophanes on my machine - quite amazing how photolike they are when the back is illuminated.

Thanks for the reply. I think I can download the program to try it out and get used to it. If I want to go to any of the other programs like VCrave Pro or Aspire I can use the price I pay for Desktop toward the purchase of the upgrade ...As I understand it. That s nice because this is plenty for now.

The part that really appealed to me about Vcarve desktop was the ability to easily machine 3D objects from Thingiverse. You can edit in Fusion 360, but it is slow unless you convert the mesh file to a brep. But often you have to eliminate detail on many highly detailed models or you can not convert it to easily edit it (ie. add tabs).

The only thing I really would like to do in Aspire I can't do in Vcarve is the 3D modeling. It seems like it is a much simpler process than Fusion 360.

You can do 3D modeling in Sketchup, then import to Vcarve

Yeah, and Fusion 360, Blender, etc... But the process in Aspire appears to be the easiest from the videos I have seen. I do a lot of it in Fusion. I prefer that over Sketchup because it seems much more intuitive to me. I used to use Sketchup all the time but when Fusion was offered for free I gave it a try and really liked it.
