Hello all. I have a question regarding the amperage adjustment on the blackbox and the current nema 23s I am using. I copied Sam's build for my cnc in this thread https://server1.openbuilds.com/threads/openbuilds-4x8-cnc.16236/ All in all it has gone well. However, yesterday I was almost findshed a cut out in half inch ply with a 1/4" endmill and my cnc went haywire and got off course (this was on the last pass and should have been the same depth as the other passes). I shut it down and tried to drive my cnc, but the x axis was making an awful noise. After some investigating, I decided to turn the amperage up at the blackbox for this axis. I am currently running a nema 23 4.2 amp motor. I have never adjusted the adjustment screws on the blackbox so it has always ran fine with the adjustment from the factory. After turning it all the way up, everything seemed to run fine again. I have cut several pieces since with no issue. So.... Is my nema 23 going bad? Why did it work for so long with the factory settings and then decide to quit? I can understand it getting in a bind during the cut and the black box not supplying enough power, but once I got it out of the bind and under no load it still did not work.... Can you guys help explain? Thanks!
More likely one of the 4 stepper motor wires that worked loose: See docs:blackbox:faq-identify-motor-coils [OpenBuilds Documentation] Turn it back to what it was, thats never the reason for this symptom The loose wire made contact again when you were fidgeting on the machine. But since you haven't found or fixed whats loose it will come back and do the same thing again soon. Check the wiring
Overheating, and its outside the sweet spot of the motor - not needed. That wasn't the cause of the issue
