I am looking at upgrading to a larger stepper motor. I currently have the BB electronics package and am using all 4 standard NEMA 23 steppers. I have recently converted to ball screws and linear rails and am noticing that every once in a while the steppers grind under load, which in turn I lose steps. I have also played with the speed settings and have noticed if I go above 3000mm\min, the steppers instantly do not like it. 3 questions. Would the current 24VDC power supply handle the HT steppers or would I need to upgrade my power supply? Reading through the forums, some people found going to a higher voltage was better. If I would need to upgrade the power supply, is there a wiring schematic available so that I am able to use the BB controller still? If I can use my current power supply, is there an adjustment to help reduce the missed steps under load?
It will handle it just fine! Adjust acceleration and max-rate settings: gnea/grbl - bigger motor = more inertia to spin up against
I did play with these settings and have them adjusted to the point they work. I would like faster travel speed and more torque. Torque over speed so that I do not have the slippage. This is why I am looking at the larger steppers.
Are you saying the high torque will handle it fine or my existing steppers? My existing steppers do not like to go above a certain point. I have not adjusted the POT settings on the controller as of yet either.
Well, both requires the same effort of tuning acceleration. Bigger motors have more torque, but slighly slower acceleration values too. Its all a matter of tuning them. Default pot adjustment is good for most machines but you can always dial in a little more - but its not a magical thing, acceleration values is more important - you want it as high as it can go, but not so high that the machine stalls out before it reached Max Rate either
FWIW I have a mix of regular and HTs on my workbee running a BB. I had to give the HTs a tad more power.

I am thinking that I will need to do the same on the standard steppers since I have linear rails and ball screws now. Thoughts?
Whats the pitch on your ballscrews, that may cause the top speed issue. Our leadscrews move 8mm/rotation
So we can do around 6000mm/mm 5/8 * 6000 = 3750mm/min just from the low pitch Factor in the extra weight of spinning a 1605 (compared to our 8*8 screws) ... Not much to be gained. High torques will do a little better
