I understand that "pigtails" on the end of a cable shield are a no-go, however inside the huanyang vfd connection area its all plastic, so nowhere to clamp the shield end... Just an earth screw terminal which i read (somewhere) you should connect both the vfd earth wire and also the shield (which necessitates a pigtail) ..?

    Any tips appreciated

Don't connect the Spindle wire shield to the VFD. A shield is meant to be grounded directly. The earth on the VFD is also grounded.

Unless you are talking about the 110/220V input? If so, then you have Line, Neutral, and Earth. That cable wouldn't be shielded.

No im talking about the vfd/spindle cable.

So, since i wish to shield as much of the cable as possible, i should clamp the shield to the backplate of the metal case just before it enters the vfd? Or run a seperate cable to the star ground from the shield end?
(metal case has a star grounding point/block where everything goes, bolted in the opposite corner to the vfd)

Solder on some extra wire to the shield as close to the VFD as possible. I'll get a pic of mine when the sun comes up.

Ive ordered some tinned copper braid to make diy "shield clamps" for the ends of all the shielded cables.. For some reason actual steel "p" shaped clamps like ive seen on google are extremely hard to find and overpriced, so ill just lay cable with shield exposed on backplate of enclosure, lay a couple cm of copper braid over it perpendicular to the cable, then screw it down on both sides with washers..

If you have any photos or schematics of what "works" i would love to see them (no rush, when sun comes up is fine )

    I completely forgot...
Black, red, and white are the three spindle wires. Green has a connector for spindle ground. Then the shield would be wired to earth ground.
