How do I program in a new bit size ( Tapered Ball Nose - 4.8 Deg Tip 0.5, 6.35 mm for example ) into the Openbuilds Touch Interface ? I need to add bit sizes to the probe file in the interface that runs the XYZ probe .
You can't probe X or Y with a tapered bit. The probe software will expect the X and Y probing to be done with a parallel bit. In fact it's best to probe X and Y with an accurate rod rather than a bit and then probe Z with the bit you are going to use. Can't help you with the specifics of setting up that probe software though I'm afraid, as I don't use it. Someone else is bound to chip in with that explanation soon. Alex.
Interface only supports standard bits, because tapers are not a viable option (you cannot get an accurate probe against a surface that is not parallel/perpendicular to the motion axes). As mentioned, probe XY with a dowel pin, regular endmill, etc - then insert the taperered bit, and probe Z only. That is the best procedure
Thank you for this explanation. I used a 6.2 degree tapered ball nose (1/32) as that last bit for a pocket of a small star and it was off about .2 mm or so. Now it is right on.
