I recently purchased a LongMill CNC machine, but was looking for better overall rigidity, and was wondering if it is possible to purchase an OpenBuild kit (OpenBuilds LEAD CNC Machine 1010 (40" x 40")) and utilize all the rest of the LongMill machine. So, for example, could I utilize the 3 motors, the control box, etc? Is the Black Box Motion Control System the same thing as the LongMill controller that everything plugs into? If I purchased the 4 NEMA motors from OpenBuilds, could they function with the LongMill control board? What exactly does the 24v Power Supply Bundle do? Finally, I see that the clearance height is 2". Is this sufficient for most carving? Could I 'in theory' carve a solid body guitar with this?
Provides power to the BlackBox Maybe, but you'd be better off (support wise, documentation, etc) with a BlackBox: See docs.openbuilds.com/blackbox Depends on their electrical specifications I'll put another option on the table. Sell the current machine - as is while it still works - then put that toward the new machine. Mixing and matching makes things harder than it has to be - and you still end up with a pile of wasted components. Selling it off on Craiglist/eBay/Facebook Marketplace gets you a return, without the effort
Thanks for the quick reply. Selling it is definitely an option, just thought I would entertain this idea first. Any advice on the overall cutting clearance question?
Clearance is the distance below the Z axis = tallest stock you can fit. It is a modular system, if you need just a little more, there are modifications like making the side 2080s a little longer (a little, not double). If you need a lot more Z, see High Z Mod for Lead 1010 CNC
