hey there everyone. if I throw a piece of material onto my 1515 cocked at a 45 degree angle and used the open builds xyz probe, would the cuts be square to my material or to the machine? does the probe make it so you don't have to get your material perfectly square on the machine? thanks a bunch?

The probe just identifies a corner and sets that as the XYZ workplace coordinates system zero. So no, it won't compensate for the workpiece not being parallel to the X and Y axes.

For that sort of job I'd CAM off a center point origin instead of a corner. Pencil a line from corner to corner and zero XY manually over the crossing point. Probe Z only.

hey Peter. I really only need to mark a line if im working on a close to model piece of stock correct? or maybe for surface work on an exact sized piece of stock? if im cutting three 12" x 12" pieces of wood out of a 4x4 sheet of ply. I can just get the bit to the center of my machine and go for it right? as long as im close to square? or maybe that dent matter either. as long as the 3 squares fall in the footprint of the machine the stock can be as angles as I want it to be right?

Not really, no. You could set up your job in your cam software at an angle, but your cam software would normally assume that you had set your stock parallel to the X and Y axes.
What cad/cam software are you using?

hey Alex. im going from shapr3d on my iPad to fusion 360 and then openbuilds. im not really having any issue with square, im just trying to deeply understand everything. let me pose a sort of though experiment. say im making a 12 inch square and my stock is a 48" diameter circle...or I want a square cut out of anywhere in the circle....either or. the edge of the circle doesn't need to be in any set location other than getting enough stock around the 12" circle right? so based on that theory, If I wanted a 12" square and my stock was 36" with all kinds of angled edges, as long as I put my spindle in the middle of the stock, id get a square 12" final product right? that is if the 12" square is the product im looking for and the angled stock is just waste. correct me if im wrong or there's more for me to wrap my mind around. ohhhh...ive also got my z acid gantry top kicked to the right 1mm over 20 inches. how do I square that babe up? thanks for being around on a Saturday. JC

and as an amendment to my response...I mean if I start my xy from the center of the circular stock and the xy center of the cut up example stock. sorry if I missed that. jonny

If in Fusion cam you set the origin in cam setup to the centre of your stock, and then set the workplace coordinates system zero on your machine in the same place the g-code, and therefore your machine, will cut where you told it to. You don't have to be truthful in Fusion cam when you tell it the shape and size of your stock as long as the stock is large enough for the job.
For the second part of your question, Google tramming spindle, or search the forum here.
    Alex.
