Thanks for the link, but I am afraid it's a bit worse than that. The system will not connect with BB32. I have downgraded to my original BB and the interface is dead now. I tried 3 different USB cables (ruled it out). two separate laptops, the HP that I dedicated to CNC (just disconnected and will not connect again) and Lenovo (that said the BB32 was trying to draw too much power and would not connect). Thanks!

Did you click the link? First section deals with short circuits, possible permanent damage etc - which from the sound of things are the likely primary issue here, and the reason I point you at it

I went over the article you sent again, It didn't have firmware failure, it stated up, could not/ would not find a USB connection to the black box. This occurred when I was fitting a dust shoe, so no commands were being sent, it was already wired to the machine with the connections I had on my first black box (this was an upgrade to BB32)..
6.3.2 Make sure you are connecting to the correct port, at this point It would not/could not find a communications port on the BB32, when I switched back to BB it had no problem with the connection. Besides this my interface is dead also and yes, I changed the cables to match the units. Thank you very much for your suggestions and help!

Was the machine powered on while you were installing the dust shoe? Any chance you bumped on a limit switch hard enough for the bottom pins to contact the beam behind, or tugged on some wiring pulling it out of a connector causing a short? Not seeing the port anymore could mean something shorted out that BlackBox (FAQ: 6.3.1)
Did you do the test we ask you to do in 6.3.1?

6.3.2 is irrelevant fine, but still do check 6.3.3 and 6.3.4 and 6.3.5 (in case its a driver issue, or a computer issue)

Interface not powering up makes me further suspicious that you had a short that burned out the 5V regulator - which is to also power the Interface

The interface is dead. The BB32 will power up, it will not connect to a laptop, after trying both laptops I have, I ordered a new laptop to be sure it's not that. Also
    • 6.3.1 Incorrect Wiring It was wired for the original BB, all connections are the same, so it was not wired wrong, as wired it powers up the BB and BB32 starts up it cannot connect laptop to BB32 it will not produce a signal (no com port).
    • 6.3.2 Make sure you are connecting to the correct port, all ports were correct for BB and connected without problem to BB32, so I used the correct ports.3
      • 6.3.3 Check Device Manager, I am sure I did this, I had to do it when I was building a Chinese control box. Then I decided {as I should have first) buy American. And I could not get clear answer from the Chinese.
      • 6.3.4 Update Drivers I have software that checks drivers each time a computer is connected. And I checked to be sure there were no windows updates.
      • 6.3.5 Computer problems the reason I order a new laptop the Lenovo (laptop) gave a message when I tried connecting with it, (not exactly sure of verbiage) but said the BB32 was trying to draw more power than it would allow' and that was the end of that testing!
      • 6.3.6 Contact the OpenBuilds Partstore, other than posting with you I did send a request for help, still waiting for their reply.
As it sets now, I think I will order another BB32 and interface and try it all over again. Yes that will be expensive but I sit here with a machine that I worked on every damm day and have for over a year. Until BB it would do nothing, and I still think BB is one of the best products available!!

No the dust shoe did not cause the problem, did not hit a relay when fitting it.

Also sounds like a short circuit (3 clues so far)
If there's a short on something plugged into the 5V line, which is also fed from USB while PSU is off - well then it would look like an overcurrent condition

"Wrong" is not the issue - but especially older wiring - can develop shorts. Chaffed through insulation, terminals coming loose, wires pulling out and touching other nearby wires. Especially while working on it like doing a controller swop and installing dust shoes and stuff like that - you are out of necessity tugging and pulling on wires and anything that was working, but already loose or damaged could now make contact where it was fine just sitting there. So please DO go over all the wiring, or a replacement will be damaged in the same way. BlackBox X32 factory QA does go through an extensive USB test while programming and also power on testing - so if it was a BlackBox issue it would not have passed QA - something damaged it between where it was working and where it stopped. Up to you to locate any possible causes, again, just to protect the new ones you are getting then

I understand what you are saying, but why would the BB (not BB32) connect with no problems at all if the (any)wires were chaffed or damaged. Just asking before tearing the machine down and restart from the beginning. I do not place blame on Open Builds or BB, My only point was to find a solution. So when I replied to you, I was attempting to provide the steps I have done, I am not arguing with your advice and hope you don't feel I am. All wiring is complete and wrapped, it consists of 4 conductors, shielded cable, the stops I purchased from Open Builds and all work properly.

The moment the "something" happened, it fried the BlackBox (from what you describe as symptoms, i'd bet a V+ to GND short)
The other one is not damaged, and the short not active at the moment - thus still working. We can theorize all day, better to get in there and go check what could have caused it.

Not at all, my concern is also just to get to the bottom of what did cause the damage - to prevent further damage :) - text is always a hard medium, as it doesn't portray the emotions. We are all good!

Check that you have the insulating washers under all of them - the pins on the back can short on nearby metal too - causing temporary shorts

Are you the support contact? I sent a question about if I purchase new, can I send the existing ones in for repair. Thinking about when I get new, I will have disassembled everything and start new (still using 4 conductors with shield cable). I have a VFD, a relay to power vacuum (dust removal) and a connection for air pump.

I just remembered that just before or close to it I added a EMI filter. Please understand I am 72 years old and trying hard to get ahold of this technology, so if I seem kinda slow.....

But for now, I will order new and hope they can be returned for (the ones I screwed up somehow for repair(s), I didn't get an answer from submitting a ticket, so I will make a walk of faith.

    Thanks again for you're help!

The store has a different team that decides on store matters like warranties, that sort of thing. They will get back to you

If you can hold a day or so, I'd wait on their response before ordering
Make sure to check your Spam folder too

Do note that the layout on that side changed a little - do make sure to rewire your 0-10v plug

Do post pics of it and how it was wired - I wouldn't install one (the Meanwell has great filtering) and perhaps it contributed to a surge causing damage instead of a short as we suspect?

I searched for mean well EMI but cannot find a listing or available place to order, I checked both Amazon and ebay, neither have anything close. I did find

Single-Phase General-Purpose DIN Rail Mount Filters
Roxburgh DRF series DIN rail mounted single-stage filters are specifically designed as line filters for 120/240 VAC devices. They provide good performance for both common mode and differential mode interference and are rated up to 250V. Typical applications include PLC control applications, security, test, and monitoring equipment.

    • 0-250 VAC/VDC, 0-60 Hz, single-phase
    • Current ratings from 1A to 10A
    • Plastic housing with a slim profile
    • Snap on to 35mm DIN rail for ease of mounting in a cabinet
I am guessing something similar is what you are making reference to? I will send picture of the one I have as soon as my iphone charges enough.. I don't know what amperage the BB32 requires but will be sure I know before ordering.

You should be using our recommended Power supply: 24V Meanwell Power Supply Bundle

It has built in filtering - everything you need. I'd be wary of adding additional filters and other unneccesary Mains components - it might just cause other issues

I am using Mean Well LRS-350-24, with a purchased front end from Open Builds. I was mistaken. I thought you said to use a Mean Well EMI filter. And have found close to that brand starting at $50 to several thousand, common sense tells me if it costs more to provide a filter that costs more than the equipment, then I should be looking for a differing setup, Sorry i misunderstood.

My reply was in response to this statement of yours. I was just saying that the Meanwell we recommend - already has filtering - and as you say you installed that extra filter shortly before things went bad - lets look into THAT filter (or just remove it) as possible cause too

Thank you once again for your advice. I will remove it as I am replacing all the wiring. Should I still use shielded cable?

You seem to have a lot of unneccesary "EMI mitigation" going on - we don't use shielded wiring, we don't have extra EMI filters - so to answer the answer your question, I guess I first need to know what's going on - why did you have all this extra going on?

When I began this path, I had no idea about anything related, I purchased the CnC and expanded it immediately, the control that came with was junk, so I opted to build one using a control base from China (big mistake) I purchased all the parts required (that was very expensive)I have power supplies (about) six of them, they required 3 power supplies. For the unit, I have stepper motors (6). it goes on and on, before I found OB. The idea to set up the machine itself is from all over the Net. I have the suggested relay set-up for air and dust removal, I have a rheostat to control the speed of DeWalt router as spindle. I have a VFD with 24000 RPM air cooled spindle setup now. I have a separate Mean Well power supply (MDR-60-12) to power (?) I will find out when I am removing wires. So, I would say everything I did was according to information on web or Facebook videos. Now if you want to build a hospital or other commercial building, I have 56 years in that business, but your world of electronics is unfamiliar to me.

    Thanks
    Larry

Who do I contact to send these (first BB32 and interface) in for repair? And it's very odd the original BB was a fused unit and the new has no protection like that? I asked support the same question but haven't heard back yet, perhaps it is under the cover?

OK shielded cables may help if the VFD is creating a lot of EMI: Review docs:blackbox-x32:faq-emi [OpenBuilds Documentation]

Yes please do find out - as we still haven't really found out what killed the other BlackBox - anything is a suspect, especially if its unknown

Cross check all that against our official docs: We have lots of little tips and warnings in there too: docs:blackbox-x32:start [OpenBuilds Documentation]

The Meanwell PSU we recommend has very fast-acting overcurrent protection built it - would kick in way before a fuse would blow. Fuses don't protect electronics, they are last line of defence before catching on fire.

Does it power up via USB cable (Into its USB-C socket on the side?)
Does it power up when connected to the old BlackBox?

Then if the fuse is to prevent fire....Glad I am hearing that now that I have moved on to bb32, my machines are set in a spare bedroom and it would have burnt house down. Any more good tidings as we progress?

The BB32 Is under power right now has been for well over an hour, first thing I notice is the fan has not/does not run. I found an internal jumper for setting voltage on the stops, mine are 5 volt and it was factory set for 24 v. Don't remember seeing that in manual!
