hey there. so im going to surface a new spoil board and I haven't used the open builds software to do it before and im going to try using it this time around. ice gone over my board and checked the height of the mdf with the z axis and my open builds probe. ive found the middle of the mdf to be the highest. I know I'll use my probe at that high point but how to I tell the surfacing wizard to start back at my x,y zero? bottom left for me. thanks a bunch. jonny

It always starts front-left (0,0,0 set in the front, left, right on top of the spoilboard)

so if I set my probe in the middle so as to get my height as thats the highest, when I start the wizard, by default it will start from starts "front-left (0,0,0 set in the front, left, right on top of the spoilboard)"
when you say "right on top" you dont mean the direction right you mean directly on top correct? and by it always starts bottom left youre saying as soon as I probe it will run itself back down to bottom left? if so I totally get it. one last thing. I see the probe in the interface but not in the wizard, so do I just run the probe process and get my z set up and then go to the surfacing wizard? is there a reason that the probe feature isn't a step in the surfacing wizard? thanks for all. jc

Set it high in the middle, Set Zero Z. Jog over to front left, and zero X and Y only

hey Peter, so im going to clarify a few things with you before I proceed. my probe is 9mm thick and im going to read the probe at the highest point on my mdf. so I probed my 9mm probe at the highest point of my mdf and the following information came back. .551 retract on the z axis as per the picture that follow. in the first to images you can see the probe retracted to .0551 and then the corresponding interface measurements. from there I moved to what is my x and y zero. that looks like this. as you can see its still at the .0551 z elevation. finally I moved back to my high point and moved the z down to zero. that looks like this. as you can see its dead on at the highest point of my mdf. so based on what you see here, I can just move back to my x and y zero and run the surfacing wizard correct? thanks for your time, I just wanted to really go over this for sure before I blow something out or up. ive done this before in easel but im kind of over that software and want to set into figuring this one out. thanks in advance. jonny

Once you have done all that, hit GOTOZERO XYZ - if it ends up on the front, left corner, just a little above the surface (difference between high spot and that corner) then yes, good to go

yep, exactly how it went. thanks again. so my last question is in regards to the wording of the surfacing wizard. is does it by default know how deep to make each pass? when im in fusion I set my max depth per pass. I take it openbuilds is doing that on its own? whats its max depth per pass? thanks a bunch

In OpenBuilds Control choose the "skim Depth":
    upload_2023-2-24_17-2-15.png
When I do mine, I generally do 0.5mm. That way the cutter isn't working real hard so there is no deflection, and I have more spoil board left to spoil. Of course if it is not completely flat (I can tell it is not cutting in some areas) I will come back and do another 0.25mm. However, I am running mine at a higher speed (2500mm/min). If you go with the default above (800 mm/min) you could easily go deeper. If you have a significant hum, I would go with those defaults. It is safe and you may only need the one pass.

Ok. So this surfacing wizard will only do one pass?

If you set final depth and depth per pass to the same value yes.

This is where I’m getting confused in regards to running the wizard. I only have a “skim depth” field. I take it that’s the depth per pass field. I don’t see anywhere in the wizard where I can set the final depth. Am I missing something here? The dark mode image is from an earlier response to my questions and the light mode image is from my computer hooked to my machine.

I do not see it either. I would suggest doing as I said above and skim a thin layer. If it is not enough, run it again after re-zeroing your Z. If you are doing a thin layer, you can increase the feed speed.

I like that after all that surfacing stuff we end up in a software issue. .348 works just fine for now. as far as my initial issue of surfacing I totally understand how to do it. I just have to do it like four different times. got it! thanks for everything and good luck on the new build for Macs. have a great day/night

oh I’m just glad I wasn’t missing anything. I started to feel like a real turd when I couldn’t get software to work. Everything gets ironed out. Always does.
