I have been using free version of Fusion 360 for hobbyists but there is a limit of 10 files. I tried out the trial version of Alibre Atom3D, going through the tutorial on creating U-joint. Is Alibre Atom3D as good as Fusion 360?

There is not a limit of 10 files. There is a limit of having 10 files "editable" at once. I have probably close to 100 files. As a hobbyist, that 10 file limit is more than enough. If I want to work on one that isn't editable, I just put one I am not working on in "read only" then make the other editable. If I need an stl file or dxf from one that is marked read only because I would like to machine it, I can still get those files while it is in that state.

Ha! I have I just looked at a rebuild of my CNC machine Fusion project folder. I have 72 files just in that one project. So my estimate of 100 was way low. I have over 130 different projects (I have been using the free version a long time) and each one has multiple files in it.

Near the top-left corner of the window, you'll see numbers like this: 2 of 10
Does this mean that I can't have more than 10 files?

No, as @Giarc said, you can have up to 10 files being editable at any one time. All your other files will be read only, meaning you can extract components etc from them but in order to change anything within a file you have to make it editable, changing another file to read only if you have hit the 10 files limit.
I have thousands of files but I very rarely need to be able to change things in 10 files at the same time.

Show the data panel if it isn't already visible (button near green arrow)

Then click on 'My editable documents' (Red circle)

Once you have this, you can switch documents to 'Read Only' with the drop-down. You can switch them back at any time, *provided* that the total number of editable documents is no more than 10.
