While diagnosing some noise and sporadic surface finish issues, I noticed that "all" of my lead screw bearings seem to have a loose enough fit in the end plate seat that they chatter. I don't really see any indication of the bearing spinning inside the end plate itself (black anodized finish in the bearing seat looks like new) but it definitely rattles back and forth during +/- travel. Is the bearing play in the end plate normal? If not, any suggestions on tightening up the tolerances for a better fit? Thanks, Matt
Bearing is pushed tight into endmount by the lock collars. If loose, reset your lock collars to prevent any axial play. A little radial play between Leadscrew OD and bearing is expected (leadscrew smaller than bearing to ease assembly) may sometimes make a little clickly noise. Can shim it just to stop the noise but the Leadscrew is free to move radially, flexible enough, only needs axial constraints
I’ve eliminated the lead screw / bearing play with some Teflon tape so that’s not a problem. The radial play between the bearing and end plate is my main concern. It may not be a “real” issue but I’m sure you know how it is when you start fine tuning things and notice slight variations or loose tolerances in parts. This is when my OCD runs rampant, mixed with ADHD makes for over complication of things at times….. = )
Can shim if you want, but carriage is constrained by the wheels, leadscrew just provides motion along one axis, and if the lock collars are tight its constrained and cannot introduce any backlash or unwanted movement there. Any other movement might be nutblocks, or loose V-Wheels
Thanks for the clarification. During this downtime I converted from wheels over to Hiwin type rails and guide blocks. Hopefully the combination of new setup and your suggestions will get me the consistency I've been looking for.
