Long time lurker on the forum but had to post now just to PLEAD with the devs to add a height map option. The other option is CANDLE which is just so buggy - almost destroyed my machine with it... It would be super handy for engraving non flat surfaces - granite, metal etc - and save me a fortune in end mills too Control is the best though - been using it for years and really appreciate the efforts behind it.
That's part of why we never got round to it either. Messing with gcode in realtime is really really hard. You got to break up long moves and arcs even to match the matrix you probed. Very hard to do right with gcode varying from different CAMs, etc To be tested at some point, sounds like an awesome feature by petervanderwalt · Pull Request #110 · OpenBuilds/OpenBuilds-CONTROL has some references/discussion, but honestly it never gets to be a priority. There is almost always an easier (and usually better) solution than messing with the gcode's Z points What is the issue at hand, perhaps we can suggest an alternative to get you going more efficiently. bCNC has a somewhat working implementation if you really need it
I've been keeping an eye on the forum for years hoping it gets sneaked in. It's not something I need very often but would definitely use more often if it was available. Just like I said in first post - I need something like a height map for engraving surfaces such as granite. It looks really flat until you start trying to engrave it - even at super shallow passes you still risk your very expensive PCD end mills. I'm after the feature just now as I'm trying to engrave on an old metal jewellery box - not something that can be resurfaced. My only tool option is a spring loaded diamond drag bit - pretty useless as the line is so feint. There are spring loaded rotational tool holders available but they're way out of my price league...
