Duet2 Wifi woes

    Hi folks,
    two or three years ago while sick leave I pulled the trigger on a Workbee 1010 with a Duet2 Wifi Controller. After long time and much tinkering I managed to move the X and Y axis but the Z axis is killing me. I have to use M564 because it won't home at all. When I move the Z axis in one direction it moves one time right, next time the wrong direction, kinda random (+5 +5 +5 +5 +5 gets like +5 -5 -5 -5 +5 ) I made the inital mistake to upgrade the firmware because I thought the double Y axis would be easy to reassign. And after that I had to realise that I have to set jumpers on the second (now) Z axis to get it to work at all. And now it does that random ****.
    For the firmware update I followed the step by step instructions on caribou3D.dozuki.com - looks prettier, is as slow as before and sometimes it throws errors like timeouts and such. (sorry that I cannot provide more details atm as I am not near my machine )
    Can you point me in the right direction please?
    I guess its time to get it finally running...

    Sounds like bad wiring: docs:blackbox-x32:faq-identify-motor-coils [OpenBuilds Documentation] - Our FAQ would still apply to other controllers, its about how motors are wired

    @Grossvatti, you would have been much better advised to follow the instructions from Ooznest on the Ooznest Learning Portal to upgrade your firmware.
    As @Peter Van Der Walt has said, your problems with a stepper motor randomly changing direction is a wiring fault. If you bought the machine from Ooznest the stepper cables come pre-assembled so you are probably looking for a connector that is not fully inserted (most likely the one on the Duet board - look for scorch marks on the connector) or a wire has been damaged.

    PS, I'm puzzled by your reference to setting jumpers to get a stepper driver working - that should not be necessary. Which jumpers are you referring to?

    Thank you @Peter Van Der Walt and @Alex Chambers for the hint with the failed cable (was pre configured when I bought it, i will try and check the connections).
    And the Firmware Upgrade Guide was from Ooznest learning, my bad (it has been ages since I did that). For the Jumpers: I read that if I want to move Z with only 1 motor Z2 has to be jumpered where the left 2 contacts are 1 pair (1 Jumper) and also the right 2 contacts (Jumper no. 2). The second Y axis went to Connector A Axis. Thats doing the job.
    Anyways, thank you both for your kind help, hopefully I will manage to hit up my hobby shop in the weekend :)

    Ahh, those jumpers - yes you are correct - Ooznest usually send the Duet board with those already installed.
    The crimps that Ooznest use (they use the same sort as come with the Duet) are frankly unsuitable for a CNC machine - the vibration can cause them to make intermittent contact and the resulting arcing can scorch and oxidise them. Stepper motor wiring failing because of this is relatively common.
