Per the special notes its a variant of the C-Beam, Machine.... I have noticed that alot of people build a CNC router to cut parts for other larger CNC machines.. eg Delta Printers etc....plus this will enable me to cut parts for model RC plans UAV's etc...

    Looks to me that more commonly that would be called a double y.

    Looks good, actually I wouldn't mind one like that myself.

    Only with the extra length in the x, or my x your y, I would double that c beam up to make an I beam.

    looks good, my only concerns would be with the uprights not being strong enough - maybe box section to a similar size as the L section and a different method of securing it to the frame and/or a brace cross the towers and the z axis with both inner and outer v-wheels

    Edit. another issue maybe the deflection in a lead screw that length unless you upgrade to a larger screw - what about the bearings ?

    [!! OCD alert !!] It's double the width (X) and double the number of Y steppers. So you are both right, right ? :confused:

    Well I guess I am going to find out one way or another...:). Regards the rigidity I will have to try it and see how it feels....as you say it may need more uprights to keep it rigid...Just ordered the main frame parts and some other items..Yeah I agree on the name Double X or Double Y ?? .Rgds...Laurie

    think you could fit a 15mm ballscrew? instead of leadscrew

    could just swapout that perspex for some 8 or 12mm alumium plate with better fixing points. that would do it.

    you could even incorporate the motor mount and leadscrew bearings in it so that it bolts straight onto the end of the cbeam

    That aluminium plate idea is great which I think I can do as one of the DIY stores has ali plat in stock at times...Laurie

    Well the initial parts "kit" (especially the frame rail parts) is on the way from the OpenBuilds store......thanks Guys!!

    Kiwis FYI... I use the NZ Post YouShop USA service to get things sent to me... which has worked out very well.....I expect to be paying some GST on it as well to NZ Customs once it gets to Auckland NZ...

    I must admit being keen to see and handle the c-beam and other rail parts....Laurie

    FYI just paid the postage from YouShop USA in Portland to my home in Alexandra Otago New Zealand and can advise the package dims etc were

    Weight12.1 kg
    Dimensions 102cm × 16cm × 16cm
    Volumetric weight 5.22 kg










    I will be getting it cleared through NZ Customs with my brothers company Shuttle Express Services Ltd, as they can get the customs clearance done for less than what NZ Post charges.....It should be in Auckland NZ early next week....I will have GST at least to pay in addition to customs clearance entry charges and fees....Rgds Laurie

    I have been following this with interest, it makes sense for the items I want to produce in the future sooo.......

    ordered the parts and have them here to do the upgrade, but I will have to look at my controller as 2 y steppers maybe pushing the limits - I may build it and run the standard C-Beam size build plate till I ask the bank for more funds :(

    thoughts on the x axis is to make a 4 post mount for the stepper to make it more stable

    Update:

    Just received the main parts for my one... frame/steppers motors/screws/t-nuts/ hard wheels....it arrived in excellent condition due to the EXCELLENT packaging by the guys at the OpenBuilds Store... I noticed they do the same as the glass cane makers (Effetre) in Murano in using shrink wrap on the rails....it holds them all together in a solid mass...Many thanks and photos to follow shortly..

    I will also put some figures up here regards NZ Customs clearance etc for Kiwis who may be following this her in New Zealand....NZ Post YouShop USA worked to a tee again...Great service from them as well...Rgds...Laurie

    I was also impressed with the packaging (of a "standard" C-beam hardware bundle).
    The individual packing into sub assembly sub kits probably costs some time and effort, and/or may make economic sense - I am not a logistics expert, but I kinda LIKED that the screws for each sub-assembly were all counted out for me.

    I will watch this build with interest, I like the double Y-axis and have often thought that doubling the Y dimension would be very useful.
    I suspect that also doubling the X dimension would bring only marginal additional usefulness - assuming most of MY parts will have only one long dimension and could be set up for that along the Y.
    My concern would be flex in a 1m gantry built of the same C_Beam and carrying the weight of even a trim router.
    I suppose a pulley system with counter weight could be rigged (-:

    I have a HUGE tendency to overdo things, so in MY case I would likely double up the carriers as well, i.e. 3 more Y "carts" (wheel sets, plates, lead screw nuts, etc.)

    I will do a update in a few days - everything is on the go slow due to me being ill and waiting on some cap heads to bolt down the build plate

    there is zero flex in the c-beam even more so with the 40x40 section in between the towers, The only one reservation i have is with the lead screw as it may "whip" at speed I'm hoping the anti backlash nut should reduce it a fair bit

    There's a Nook critical speed chart in the resource section. It might offer you some insight as to whether your screw will give you problems.

    Hey Flash. Did you find there was any whip on the screw thread ? I am looking at upgrading my OX to C beam driven axis.

    Yes there is a bit of whip but so far (with the anti backlash nut ) it doesn't seem to effect the accuracy across the 820mm bed I have on mine

    A long time off but today I tried to grind off the little tabs of the brackets and that didnt work at all... so I have decided to leave them as is and put them back on....Laurie

    Some info on what its cost me so far.... this may be useful to other Kiwis in NZ looking at doing this...

    Initial parts from the Openbuilds store (rails/motors/screws/wheel kits..etc.... USD 401.88 @ 0.6281 was NZD 639.87 plus the local banks offshore fee $13.44 (which includes shipping to the YouShop USA warehouse in Oregon...)

    NZ Customs clearance using my brother freight forwarding company $165.49 plus NZ Customs clearance fee $57.49

    I used NZ Posts YouShop USA to post it from their warehouse in Oregon to my home here in NZ... $137.25... as I chose not to have them do the clearene into New Zealand

    So the total so far is NZD 1,013.54

    So small amounts/items I will just get the Openbuilds store guys to post directly to me but still go the YouShop USA/NZ Post way for larger ones....
