This is my first CNC build. The Sea-OX is a machine built out of three 1000mm C-Beams. I plan to have a Y length of 1000mm and a X length of 650mm. The Z should have the ability to move approximately 100mm.

    So I am working on homing and limits for my Sea-Ox. Enclosed is a pic. Am I setting these sensors up correctly. Any suggestions ??

    I had shoulder surgery last month and am still recovering. As soon as this sling is off and I can move my arm, without getting hurt, I will purge my shed and make room to start building my own CNC. Woohoo!! And the best part is that my sweetheart is paying for it. ;)

    Sounds a little odd though. Is it the Y motors making that noise/vibration?
    It seemed to be generated when moving on the Y axis away from the camera?
    Just a thought. :rolleyes:

    Yes the Y does make noise. The slower the speed the more noise. At a feed rate of 1500mm it's much smoother. That is the one thing I can't seem to fix

    Check this Forum for "Low Amps to Steppers" or, "Noisy/Vibrating Steppers". It's getting the balance between the voltage and Amps.

    So I just went thru every setting on the stepper card. I have the amps at 2 which match the motor exactly. I then changed the decay / static current pct and the micro stepping from 1 to 16. It's basically all the same at slower speeds. It seems better at higher speeds like 1200 to 1500. The video yesterday was at 800 speed. Not sure what to do to make it less noisy at slower speeds

    Can I suggest you start a New Thread with the "Noisy Stepper Header"
    Copy your Video to it, and give some details of your setup.

    I think I may have found the issue . I ran the machine on the Y and noticed that there was hardly any noise near the center of the Y area. But the big noise was near the ends of the c-beam. I remeasured the distance from the nut block to the Y bracket with several pieces of 3 d prints that were different each by .25 mm. I found that I had a gap of 3.5mm. I was using 4mm spacers. So I printed new 3.5 mm spacers and will put them in tonight. I am hoping that the pressures of the extra .5mm was causing the screw to vibrate and cause noise. I will know tonight

    Very great design. Any news about how it perform.. ? Like will it be better to use a rail system over the Z instead of the system with the 12weel and the spindle at the bottom ?

    I don't understand why people who want to use mach3, try to find n old XP machine that has a parallel port output. Sure it's cheap , but, it's not all that good for other things. Just software compatibility for a start!
    Why not get a pi add in parallel card for a modern pc. You can even add 2 if you want & have room, Gives Mach3 a lot of extra room. I'm running a card that cost $10 on eBay under Windows 10 & all is fine

    Actually , I bought a new machine with a built in parallel port. I am running win 7 32 bit mode. The entire computer brand new with a 256GB ssd and 4gb of ram was only $210. It works awesome !!!

    It's not necessarily just for the lpt port. The general rule of thumb has been to not use the PC for anything else while running a part (Like a modeling program). Something about interupting data buffer and some other jargon that's above my head. This is an old addage from the days of single core processors. That said, newer multithreading PC's and Mach4 can probably get away with a lot more before running into problems however that has not been my experience with a multicore and Mach3. Personally, I had an old Dell slim XP laying around and use that as a dedicated mach3 machine. It's stripped down and has a minimum amount of background processes running. Cost me nothing since I had it laying around. I do use an ess so that helps. Artsoft does recommend updated graphics for the toolpath display. I ran into issues with larger files and the display so I just found a screenshot that doesn't use the toolpath display.

    Making some "Heavy" changes. Had 4.5mm stainless steel plates. Now I have 4.5mm carbon fiber plates. Saved over 20 lbs. Almost done putting things back together.

    Hi Steve, thanks for all the great ideas and for your design. I've been looking at building an OX stainless with 8mm ACME screws but 4.5mm carbon fiber plates sound like a great idea. How is the CF performing? What are your expectations for repeatability and durability over time? How much did the full set cost? Any insight much appreciated.

    Well so far the machine is running great. The entire XYZ area that moved lost around 25 lbs. The set of carbon fiber was $325, which was actually cheaper then the stainless steel I bought originally. Over time, I dont know, I can only assume it will be fine because many people use that green fiberglass for parts and it works well. And people use carbon fiber for things like bikes and those don't break.

    Nice job @Steven Bloom! ditio what @JustinTime commented on the signs really love them and the tiling technique you use to make this large of a sign by moving the board through for each letter is great!
    Same feeling on the snow Justintime we are done with it here in NJ as well. It's been a bitter slushy winter in this year. Does help us to appreciate the nicer weather when it comes though :)
