VERSUS VOTING BUTTONS above thread Screw Drives - low cost, smooth, quiet operation Belt Drive - efficient and easy to operate and maintain OR ARE THEY? When it comes to drives, which do you prefer?
I like working with screws, However I also like belts. I say depending on your build they both have merits. But screws get my vote
Good point @3DMON , added Rack & Pinion to the choices. Now you can see 3 Voting buttons above the thread!
As was said above, they each have their place, each option has its strengths and their compromises. If I could only have one choice, it would have to be a leadscrew.
Have not voted yet, but ... Screw drives start to wobble if they are made too long. Rack and Pinion can be extended (with butt joints) to any size without wobbling.
Rack and pinion reminds me of the bad ole days of cars and all of that slop they had in their steering wheel column.
I imagine so BUT why was there so much slop on something that could kill you, anyone in the vehicle and anyone near the vehicle when it was in motion?
I would say rack and belt, GT3 based. We at Openbuilds Mexico are working hard to get the setup together. I've made the design a year ago but it seems there are some patents in the USA that will not allow it to be sold as OpenSource, but hey, they are just parts, we can't stop the people from putting it together .
Of the 10 votes cast at the top of this thread, screws are winning by a landslide! POLL CLOSES IN 6 HOURS. VOTE ABOVE. Thanks!
