Very awesome. I'm still working on assembling mine, cancer + doctors + lab work + pain has severely slowed me down. I'll be trying to tune in to see how someone elses build process goes vs my own
lord_drachenblut: I know exactly where you are coming from, and, I know I'm really lucky to be coming out the other side gradually. I hope it all goes well for yourself!! Gray
Really awesome to hear that you are coming out the other side. I have stage 4 esophageal cancer. As it stands there isn't coming out the other side... It's more fighting as long and hard as I can unless we find something truly incredible via clinical trials. We have exhausted everything that is approved and on the market for this kind of cancer.... And I'm half the average age that people normally get this
Hey all, thanks for the interest, I am really looking forward to the streams. Twitch is a great platform for live interaction, you can type in chat and I will have a tablet handy and can respond to any/all questions. You will need a twitch account to type in the chat (free) or you can just lurk! I hope all can stop by!
Live Chat too? Oh man, this is going to be a lot of fun Brady! Viewing party @ my house! If you have a Roku box - there is a Twitch App built in. I'll be watching on the big screen!
Correct. Any Amazon device has an app built in, Kindle Fire or Fire TV Stick. You can also download an iPhone/iPad app too!
Day 1 went well. Brady's shop is impressive to see and he's not afraid to shed some blood to get the job done. Great seeing so many OpenBuilds folks on the live chat. It really makes the stream better to see everyone sharing tips. Day 2 Brady will move on to the front and back assemblies. The build manual had a lot of practical tips. Many thanks to @Moag for all the time he dedicated to that part of the design. It really makes it easier for beginners and experts alike. Also thanks to @Mark Carew for the great tips on software etc in the live chat. @lord_drachenblut @gimp_geek as current XLarge builders, your input was also super helpful! See you all Wednesday night for Day 2!
Glad I was able to stop in and check out the live build. One thing I can say is to check the length of the c-beam for the y axis and the length of the 20x60 vslot. Make sure that all 4 pieces are the same length before getting to far into the assembly process
Also be aware that some of the sons and nylon nuts you need for part of the gantry work are extras from the wheel kits
Thanks a lot Brady and the folk at OpenBuilds! We enjoyed the cast albeit with some tech issues on our side as well. We were part of a larger coder meetup and got distracted a lot. Sorry we didn't get to say hi. We are getting close. I realized that my bike tool that worked fine for the actuators will not do for the frame. I need a couple of extra bits and tools (my order coming in shortly). Essentially I will test the motors tomorrow, I spent the whole day cutting up the MDF to size. Unlike Brady's magic, my woodworking skills are sub par. (StemLabBrown (@STEMlabBrown) | Twitter) But I threw at it all I had (a small handheld Dremel rotary). This by far was the hardest part of the build which speaks volumes of how well done the cast and the instructions are. Where do you guys think we should go for drill bits and 1/4 to 1/8 converter for Bosch Colt? We work in an impoverished part of downtown Jackson. I assure you all that the C will put a lot of smiles on our kids' faces and as we expand to a public location over the next few months, make some parents better off. (We are inside a Jackson public school at the moment.) If ever in the deep South, make sure to pay a visit.
Excited to hear that you are making such great progress. I agree that Brady does make it look easy - hard to believe that this is his first time building a CNC machine. I love your ability and willingness to learn new things! There is so much that you can do with a machine like this! Will you be opening the build to the community again @Darko Sarenac ?
Yes you can ask about the build. We touch on everything as Brady is building. If you missed, you can watch archive including the archived chat.
DAY 2 live stream now available in the archive on twitch. Its a 2 part show with a text adventure game inbetween (you had to be there) Chat is also archived. Brady finished the frame and began assembling the actuators. Tune in tomorrow night at 8:30pm!
Kirkwoodworking has his own woodworking channel and audience and is building a C- Beam live to be used as an addition to his shop equipment. Another tool in his shed so to speak. He's an experienced woodworker building this for the first time. For folks that have questions about electronics and other builds, the forums are the place to ask. Live questions about his experience building the machine would be based on his current experience building it and they are welcomed. Questions for him after would be great once he gets it assembled and running. So tune into his twitch feed to check on his progress. He's cruising along quite well. I'm sure he's going to enjoy the addition to his shop. I can't wait to see what creations he makes after implimenting it into his arsenal of shop equipment. @MaryD The text adventure was pretty fun.
@Joe Santarsiero it was great having you there to help field questions and give your tips. The chat is a wealth of information.
I missed day 2. It is middle of the night in Europe when this show is on. At what time will day 3 start?
@KirkwoodWorkingKirkwoodWorking sorry I missed day two. I ended up in the ER.... The joys of cancer side effects...
Show archive is always available on TWITCH. Day 1 and 2 are both available to watch now. Tonight building starts at 8:30 PM Eastern. (late for your part of the world)
@lord_drachenblut I am sorry to hear that. I was looking for you last night. We missed your experienced voice. I trust you are home now? How are you doing?
So much progress on the C-Beam XLARGE tonight. Be sure to watch Day 3 in the twitch archive especially the chat that had so many new tips. Brady intends to complete the entire build, and electronics tomorrow. Seasoned vets, do you think Friday will be the final build day?
