Looks like it will be a good one Gino. Love your Render. Please keep us posted as to how it goes. Good Luck Gray
Thanks a bunch @GrayUK I plan to keep the post alive and keep you updated. Might have one or two (dozens) questions
Agreed this does look like the start of a great build @GinoTheCop Looking forward to following along. keep up the great work Mark
It looks very good. The perfect union of OX Cnc and the C-Beam . I think it will be a promising cnc. Keep track of your project because it is the cnc I was looking to do. Good luck with the project. ¿Are you going to upload the model in Sketchup? I am very interested. With your permission and if it is free I'll do as an equal looks good.
@Zhork, @Mark Carew Thanks a lot for your positive feedbacks! And yes Zhork I will happily share the Sketchup model once I complete the build. I just dont want to end up with misleading anyone before I build the machine. I can send you the model via email if you want to have a look and work on it.
Gino, I am rebuilding my C-beam to look similar to this. Could you also share the model with me? Thanks
Hi @H B B I am currently away from home for the weekend. Please send me your email and I will send it yo you as soon as possible. Thanks
As almost all my parts are now here in my hands, I started to build my first machine. Here are some photos from the build of the frame; TOP VIEW; BACK INITIAL APPROACH FOR FEET; (I changed this to my original design afterwards) FIXTURES FIXTURES; FRONT VIEW ORIGINAL DESIGN FOR FEET; (Unfortunately top hole does not align to fix to the v-slot but its not a problem 2 screws are sturdy enough. I plan to install an on/off button here) And yes I will correct the misalignment So far everything goes according to the plan. I will receive my gantry plates from the shop this Monday. I can then start building gantries. After that it will be wiring up electrics/electronics. Thanks for reading!
Looks good , a frame very well designed and rigid, that gives you a good cnc . I follow your project to see it work
Thank you @Zhork Here is another update on the build. I today received the gantry plates. There are too many scratches on the plates made (a friend of mine did them for me) and some of the holes are not the exact size. However I managed to clean them a bit and fix the holes to see whether my design will fit ok for everything. And it did! So I can now confirm the gantry plates works fine for the build. Two problems though; My measurement for Y axis was not 100% correct. I measured the c-beam slot to be 812mm. However I had to use 3 mm spacers to make it fit perfectly. I am not sure why this happened but its not a big problem as the spacers fixed the gap issue. I will re-align the frame at some point as it might be a little bit off in the final corner i fixed. Second problem occurred while fixing the motors to the c-beam end mounts. Because the area, where the screw head touches the motors, is not flat and large enough to house M5 screws, they do not fit exactly and that causes the motors not being fixed straight and they are a bit loose. I had to use my Dremel to sand off about half a millimetre from the screw-heads and that sorted out the problem. Now all 4 motors sit tight at where they are. So here are the pics from the progress. (I can only work on the project after working hours so its going a bit slow. Next will be electric-electronic part of the project) I still need to find a way to bring the on-off and emergency stop buttons to the lower front of the machine but the problem is the holes on the Threaded Rod Plates, I used are too small for any button for the job. I need to make a box for the cnc pro card as well. Thanks for reading! Below you can see the sanded off screw-head to make the motor fit straight and tight to the end mounts.
OK finally found some free time to work on the machine again. Here is a video to see it alive. Thanks for reading!
Thanks a lot @GrayUK & @Giarc Here are some more pics of the final state of the build. As you can see its almost ready to cut some foam for testing. Please also see the cable chain mount I made today from 2mm aluminium. You will also see a design mistake I made with the gantry plates. It is the positions of the holes on the extruded portion to hold the 20X40 v-slot for cable chain. That was a last minute idea before sending the file for cut and I made it too low so I had to use the cable routing holes for that. That needs to be corrected on the design. I am also attaching my current settings. Please have a look and advise if you see a major issue there. The faster the max speeds the more silent is the machine but setting it to 5000 and above for Y axis makes one of the motors stall and Y axis loses its position as its controlled by two motors. More to come when I next have free time to play with it. Great build! I was planning on building a machine myself when I came across yours. Would you be willing to send any information on this build to me?
Hi @Devin Janssen ; Sure I would love to help anyone. I am a bit busy till the end of May. After that I will have plenty of time. Meanwhile please let me know how I can help.
I like the looks of your build & the idea of using the C-beam. What is the cutting area of the machine? I'm thinking it is about time for a little bigger/better machine than the one I have. Thanks
I finally have some time again and decided to go for an upgrade. Will be changing the X gantry plates, add a second spindle mount and change the design of Y gantry plates. This is how it will look like when finished. Ordered some parts from the UK shop already.
This looks toooooo good to use! It should sit in a shop window to be admired by the likes of us lot. You realise this means during the build, we want......... Pictures. Pictures. Pictures. Pictures. Pictures. Pictures. Pictures. Pictures.
Haha! It indeed does! @GrayUK .. Believe or not after each use I am cleaning the machine to try and make it shine again! But nothing beats a good render looks Anyway, I will hopefully finish the upgrade within a month or so as the machine is sitting in a friends workshop (35kms away from home) currently but I do promise lots of pictures and vids for the upgrade. Thank you @Mark Carew
This is such a cool build, been following it for a while...great work!!! As part of the Vise design I had envisioned this very use (the OXmill came to mind). I was about to suggest it when I saw Moag beat me to it It's so nice to see it rendered in this manner, it will be even better to see them in action...again, great build Sonny
Thanks a lot @Sonny Lowe I have been thinking a bit more and how about L shaped blocks for cutting plates etc. to save the table top from accidental scratches and damages? I believe it should work fine unless the piece is a large one. For larger pieces the stock might bend down, bu then again a 5 mm waste material would do the job.. Any thoughts?
Maybe I'm missing something, but how will you lock it down? Rows of evenly spaced holes or slots in the track, so that the vice/clamp can be slotted into it? Perhaps some sort of sprung locking mechanism which will twist and lock into the track? Some use of locking T nuts perhaps? Gray
