I was hoping someone could tell me how many amps the Smoothieboard 5xC sends to the stepper? (Sold here at OpenBuilds)... Smoothieboard 5xC v1.1 I'd also like to know the top end of the voltage in the board can take. Ultimately, the NEMA 23 High Torque motors can utilize 3 amps peak and 24 to 48 VDC. I want to know if the board can supply that. Thanks kindly! Trip
The information you seek can be found here. If you want to go higher than the 2A and 24V allowables, you're going to need external drivers.
I just ordered a Smoothieboard 5xC and the NEMA 23 High torque motors (3A peak) and noticed the same restriction when reading the wiki. I wanted to get the high torques to accommodate for future upgrades. I can purchase the external drivers in the future to accommodate this. In the meantime I still want to use this setup and I wanted to clarify your note above. Is it possible/safe to run these steppers at 2A without external drivers? I didn't find the Smoothieware wiki to provide an explicitly clear answer. I can live with a lower performance output, I just want to ensure it is safe and functional.
Yes you can use the onboard drivers with the high Torque motors initially. You won't get full torque though. But at least you'll be functional
Hey Peter, thanks so much for your reply. I have a fearful respect for electricity and I always appreciate a bit of help and reassurance when it comes to these things.
