what software are you using? i want to build a 5000mm x 1000mm laser engraver with one motor for x axis and one motor for the y axis. im new here and not sure what software to use. can i use the cnc xpro v3 board for my motors and laser? will that be all that i will need regarding software?
I would not try to do one motor for the Y with a frame that big. You will find that the Y will NOT track straight with a single motor in frame size like that. I went with 2 Y motors and a single X motor. For the price of Nema 17 steppers, you might as well run 2 motors. For software I just use LaserGRBL, its free and works quite well. Yes you can easily use the CNC Shield for this project, that is what I am using Happy building!!! Cheers, Russ
Post away. About the only thing that is off limits is mystery vendors claiming to be selling "genuine" OpenBuilds parts that really aren't genuine OpenBuilds parts.
Still waiting on some parts to arrive. Since my build is relegated to the garage (to quote her...' it smells like burning wood in the house') I built a fold down working platform. I also got to at least run the Y axis for a test run to check belt tensions and general alignment.
Thanks Rick. Will know for next time. As an fyi, I purchased it through Aliexpress... but I had messaged the user a link to the one I bought.
thanks guys this is a real help. with the 1 motor y axis i want to use a stainless steal rod going to the other side with a gear for that belt. sure it will work. what is you thoughts?
Yes that should work. Make sure it's good and straight at that distance or you may end up with induced shifting of the axis.
Well it's been a productive week. 98% completed now. All motors, GT2 belts and drag chains arrived. All cables sheeved and dressed. Only have the power cable to cable clamp in place.gotbto run a few test prints.... I have to say so far I'm impressed.
First upgrade on the way.... I knew it wouldnt take long. 5.5 watt laser coming in. Nothing really wrong with the 2 watt, but hey...bigger, better, faster
Grabbed the image off google and etched it through LaserGRBL The guitar logos are Christmas presents for relatives Logos tend to be easy to engrave. Photos with varying grey scale are hard to get the brightness and contrast correct.

You seem to have some line gaps in a couple of your images. Is the setting for spacing too large, or is something else going on? Also, what kind of travel speeds can you get with this setup?
