I will happily do this. Let me rewrite it as a "how to". Got a few more coming up as I am setting it up for pwm control and I know that this is also something people struggle with.
Apologies, I cant for the life of me figure out how to export 3D files from the free version of sketchup into Fusion360. I can only export .dae and .kmz as 3D and fusion 360 can load .igs, .iges, .sat, .smt, .stp, .step and .f3d I may be missing something very straight forward, but Im not seeing it. BTW, love the build and Im starting my own now. How do you like the new 2.2kw spindle ?
Have a look at this plugin for Sketchup that will allow STL and DXF exports Also there is another plugin/extension that will also export STL from SketchUp. Hope this helps
Thanks Mark. Unfortunately you cant generate CAM off of Mesh objects yet in Fusion 360. I could have projected the plates onto a new sketch but that would have only been an approximation. Instead, I duplicated the mods for the v2 50mm taller side plates to the existing v1 .f3d files. That will allow me to generate the CAM. Ive attached the file if its useful to anyone else.
Just to be clear, it is the same BOM and same build steps as the original "Sphinx", just with larger extrusions and lead screws (and the taller plates). I think I will be ordering the parts from Openbiulds Store, and I want to make sure I've got the whole BOM to order from. Thanks!
You might want to add some additional supports along the bottom and not only rely on the wasteboard for support. You'll need to adjust your angle brackets and whatnots accordingly.
Just checking , did you use 2 x anti backlash nuts per Y axis? I'm about to add Y plates from Chris as my first set did not work nicely.
2 anti backlash nuts will make it too tight. Either one anti backlash nut or 2 regular ones. I learned the hard way.

Aproximately 840mm on the X and 860mm on the Y with the current spindle and gantry setup. This may change. With the new spindle I am experiencing better tollerances as I had movement in the spindle itself previously. I am able to etch PCB's with the current setup using a 0.05mm mill. The new geared Z will also improve resolution and will improve this axis also. Due to the size and weight of the machine and the materials used I can actually notice very small movements (0.10mm) during calibration just by leaning on the desk. We found this out when leaning in to view a PCB being cut. Because of this we strengthened the desk, reduced its size and will be adding a cast bed as the next addition.
I did and due to a lot of precision setup have had no problem. I tried with a single backlash nut but did notice a difference. I may try this with the next build.
Excellent new. And this is still on a 1000 x 1000. That’s will suit me perfectly as I need 800 x 800 or just over.

I want to buy my extrusion to have the same size of your machine and can you confirm me the size of the extrusion you use for your machine ? It's the correct dimension ? Vslot & CBEAM Qty 5 20x60 V-slot 880mm base/frame Qty 2 20x60 V-slot 996mm base/frame Qty 3 C-beam 1000mm X, Y axis Qty 1 C-beam 310mm Z axis (this could possibly be shorter, have not finalised this yet) And the lead screws: Qty 3 1040mm - this is the full size no cutting needed Qty 1 355mm Thanks !
So buffing the 15mm screws removed scratches enough to shorten them to 12mm? Or did you buff 3mm of material off of them to to get them down to 12mm? I'd suggest grinding rather than buffing. Grinding is a lot more aggressive and its a far fast way way of removing that much material. If you want to buff scratches out of them after grinding that much material that is probably OK too.

Hi, I’m building the Kyo Sphinx model size 600x800 with higher Y plates. Very similar build as yours. I have ordered a spindel type ER20 2.2kW water cooled with VFD. As I read about your build, it seems you are happy with this large spindle? I was worrying about the weight. Are you still happy with it?
