I looked up the stepper/driver combo you picked out for this build, and I must say it is incredibly expensive. You should be able to source out the equivalant setup for about 1/4 of the price.
Yes, there are cheaper alternatives for electronics, this is my first CNC build therefore I perfer plug and play with support instead of experimenting
I get that, it eliminates potential trouble spots. I guess I just hate paying large sums of money, I would rather have to struggle a bit and save money
Comparing it to purchasing a turn key table ei: Torchmate, Plasmacam, this is still much less money with similar support. When it comes to the digital torch height control, quality components, CandCNC looks like they have it figured out. With the exchange from US to CAD it is the most expensive part of this build, I will experiment with my next CNC project
Its a reason I have not bought or built my own CNC table until now, I find the convenience will be worth it, but I can outsource very reasonably here. These guys are not out to gouge, they just want to keep their equipment running
Nice table! After 2 year I decided to build one myself. How tall are the legs and the height of the table from the floor? You Z travel? Thats where I stuck on mine. Would you consider sharing the file for the legs only?
The top of the slats are 30" to bottom of leg, overall leg is 36", used the 40X80X250 C-bean for the Z with jack screw, has plenty of travel, check my files and drawings section for more pics of the Z
The more I look at your table the more I like it. So it belt drive, did you come up with the X and Y axis gantry plates? I dont see anything like that at openbuilds.
Yes it will be belt drive, I'll post more pics as soon as I get the electronics this week. Designed the plates, outsourced water-jet cut 5052 Alum.
Thanks, brother has a business making front end loader blades, he threw in the parts with a batch he was painting
My first thought it to say......Well go on then...show us the rest of your files You do have a really nice looking table! I have no experience with CNC plasma as I have just hand held everything. I recently inherited a nice plasma machine and am thinking to build a table for the ability to make nicer cuts. I do this as a hobby, but like to build things right the first time. I started my thought process as a 16" x 30" to sit atop a utility cart, but as I progress with my education on the subject, I realize that was way too small to be practical and now feel it would at least do a 2'x4' sheet to make material handling easer. What are your thoughts on size? Also I seemed to have skimmed over belt drive. Someone who has accomplished such a nice build must have good reason for choosing belt drive over screw. Would you please share your thoughts? Powell
Belt drive offers simple, smooth, fast, & accurate motion. My gantry is light weight therefore this system should be fine
Super cool, I like the looking of the frame and legs done by pressing. And the color also add to the great looking. You mentioned the pressing was done by a local company; where are they located? I'm also from Canada and would like to see if they are close by. I have same problem when buying in the USA, costs are at least 30% considering the rate exchange and the cost of the shipping. I'm in the process of building a CNC and I was thinking to register for the contest, but after looking at your project and a few others, I don't think I have a chance! . I'll keep looking at your project as I plan to upgrade my CNC with plasma capability later on and I will see how you do and probably grabs a few ideas. Best of luck to complete your project.
