I'm in the middle of a build that should be completed in January if all goes well, but it's not all OBPS stock, or even off-the-shelf parts. "Parts list with parts links" doesn't have an "(if applicable)" though, makes it sound like no parts can be fabricated, printed, lasered, machined, etc. Which is kind of anaethema to the OB philosophy, so I'm assuming it wasn't intended as specifically written?

Two questions: 1. When you say "complete", do you mean the build must be completely done (then why would I need the powerpack?), or that the documentation must be reasonably complete (not missing, or incomplete documentation up to the point where someone is at, even if they aren't done their machine)? 2. When you say "does not have to be OpenBuild Parts", what if none, absolutely zero parts are openbuilder parts? (I found out about openbuilder afterwards)
Perhaps I'm just missing something entirely here, but... wouldn't it make more sense to tie in something that draws in people who don't already have openbuilds machines?
Also, does it have to be a complete working machine, or would hardware be enough? Otherwise you'd have a working machine and a complete set of spare electronics.
Does the CNC need to be "complete" or does the documentation of the CNC need to be accurately encompassing, even if the CNC isn't done? Also, "Does not have to be OpenBuilds parts but if they are" - so if I made a CNC before I found out about openbuilder, can I submit that?
It's awesome give away, but if you want people to really get into it, the time frame is too short. Not everything could be reasonably ordered from here in the US (or other OB retail locations). By the time that stuff comes, January is over. Therefore it's an incomplete project. You'll end with a very small pool of people who either already have extra components of EVERYTHING they need sitting around or doesn't have to worry about funds. In the latter instance, they probably wouldn't even care to enter. On the other hand, I know there are quite a few people with theoretical builds. I personally have been working on a design (and variants) for a little over a month. If proper documentation can count as an entry, you would have an overflow of entrants (which isn't an entirely bad thing). I'm sure that you would see some serious creativity. One last thing. Is there any particular design requirement? Should the machine have to be able to use the particular gear from the giveaway? If not, then someone can technically build the absolute cheapest and tiniest machine just for an entry. It's doubtful that they would win, but a very thought out machine, even if tiny, is technically a good entry. Again, I think this is really awesome, but may be a bit much.
well I will have to wait for the next contest... I have just stared planning my build, looking at a cantilever design, for rougher and 3D printing. Bed area of about 300mm x 300mm starting small as it is cheaper. Good luck to you all. God bless Roy
These questions are confusing. Everyone seems to be treating "the singular machine" as the end, and not the means, or merely a step on the journey. It's not like commercial systems where you pick your specs and then that's it. OpenBuilds machines are permanently open to repurpose, rebuild, modification and multiplication (I feel like there's a tag line in there somewhere!). These same components could be put on an X-Carve or whatever as spares or upgrades. No need for an OpenBuilds-specific machine; any 3-axis gantry router type system uses essentially the same components. This could be used to beef up a small machine (maybe the one entered?) into more of an OX style machine, too. The overarching point is to encourage people to use OpenBuilds parts, to share knowledge and promote the site by publishing builds, and to financially support those OpenBuilds builders on their next build in return. And yes, there's always a "next build"! This timeframe is for people already using components from Black Friday and the Winter holidays, not people just starting their planning. Personally, most of my components are recycled from a 2014 build or have been sitting waiting on this very build since about March 2016. I've missed several contests at this point, not the end of the world. Besides, motion control components are like electronics components- it's sensible to slowly build up racks/bins of them because you just never know. If someone doesn't have a machine at all, doesn't know how to get under the hood, doesn't feel the need to upgrade their commercial extrusion gantry router, or any other number of options that make this prize not particularly enticing then they're probably not publishing builds and wouldn't even bother entering the contest. It's just not for them on this occasion. No big deal. I'm sure they're open to contest ideas if anyone has a concept to bring in [Inventables/Laguna/other] owners or non-machine-owners. Getting people started in an ecosystem is always a popular use for contests. Given that a non-owner/builder is by definition going to have a somewhat limited contribution to the general purpose of this site, it could be a fairly creative idea. (Here's one possibility off the top of my head: best 2.5D CAD model in, say, an 8x8x2" work volume. Milled out and judged by the OB team with marks out of 10 for creativity, practicality, quality, etc.) The problem with just a "machine design" contest is that no one has any idea whether the designs actually work in practice without building them.
As far as I can tell by reading the rules, the "build" doesn't necessarily have to be a "machine". I would expect a fixture or some handy, unique assembly would qualify as well.
I may be misunderstanding this as well, but it seems like this contest is heavily slanted towards people who already have something put together or already have a bunch of Openbuilds stuff. If the goal is to rbing people in, I"m not sure how this will achieve it, since it seems the only possible winners would be people that are already into Openbuilds or similar stuff. The contest may not specify a machine, but it does specify that the build is "complete" so It seems foregone that the win will go to someone who has a complex assembly already finsihed or in the works. Someone above said that this was for people who already bought parts in November, but what sense doest hat make, to introduce a contest that you've alreday lost if you didn't order parts two months ago? Even if you are in that category, I agree that with the person above saying that the time frame is too short. I already have a bunch of Openbuilds stuff and a plan for a large format 3d printer, but even with all the parts already bought I won't be able to have a finished machine by 3 weeks from now. Perhaps the OB team might offer some clarification?
I have a quick question: Do I have to "enter" my build anywhere with a link, or say "This is my contest entry", etc? (Or does just posting the build qualify me?)
Can I submit an Instuctable that I'm working on? Or do I have to rewrite it and submit it through the "submit a build" link?

Just a thought I can try and send you the Google SketchUp 3D drawing. I say try because not sure how to attach it here.
this is a SketchUp file showing what I am planning Not done a full cutting list yet... but its all made out of C channel. that I do know what you want 3 off 1000mm long 5 off 500mm long 2 off 500 long 8mm Acme lead screw 1 off 1000 long 8mm Acme lead screw plates you can see I hope and there are some that i will be making but they are not on this drawing. 2 off 25mm linear guide rail + 4 off carriage The reason behind trying to do a design, is that you can put guide pins in the base so you can turn the material around or move it along the table. So in theory! I will have a base cutting area of 330mm x 600mm. But with the cantilever design I can put a piece of wood on that is 600mm x 600mm and just router half then turn it around and do the other half. If this works as well as I think it will, I am planning to re-build it with some Aluflx Profile 8 aluminum extrusion. Using 80mm x 40mm for the cantilever because at 1000mm long and with a force of 100N they say you get 0,17mm deflection on the X-ascis and only 0,08mm defflecion on the Y-axis. I have also put 3 jpeg files of my design. If anyone wants to use it this design go strait ahead. But if you do make it PLEASE tell me what you think.

We agree that some updates to the contest rules could be helpful. #1 Deadline Extension - You will be happy to know that the deadline for submitting your entry has been extended to February 28, 2017 #2 Acceptable Entries – Completed Builds and Builds that aren’t complete due to the fact that they are lacking the electronics are both acceptable entries. In other words, the majority of the Build is underway and the Electronics are needed to complete it. No napkin sketches or 3D models only please. These updates should help a lot of you get into the running for the Ultimate PowerPack.
