Hello all New to openbuilds forum I have been looking around for a router plan and am very impressed with the ox. Hats off to the openbuilds team! This is a very clean design and think its what im going to go with. One of my ? 's are does anyone use a nema23 on z axis for greater speed instead of nema17? I plan on using Hobbycnc control board since I have had good luck with it on my bench top milling machine. Thanks for any advise or do's and donts!
I use a nema17 for a quite heavy Bosch 1617. The motor doesn't seem to have any issue with that, the only problem is that if I kill the motors the vibrations of the router are enough to make the Z axis "fall" into the table. It is a potential issue and I have not a good solution for it.
I think most people are now changing over to Nema 23's all round. Robert Hummel, who makes aluminium plates for the Ox, now produces parts to allow 23's to be fitted. Let's face it, the only differences are positive ones, other than an increase in price, which for one extra is minimal. You will be gaining that extra torque, maybe speed, and there is that problem of Z Axis drop. Go for a 23, it's got to be worth it. Cheers Gray
I assume that you can manage that by adding an extension spring to balance the weigth of the router/z axis, but yes, the Nema 23 is much simpler
Files are in a complete zip I have to add the Z plates still but the main parts are there Open in sketchup and generate the code
