Hi community. I have a particular question. I am newbie in the CNC world and I'm researching to buy my first CNC and after few months of researching I come to this questions : I need to work with hard wood and I need a strong machine to do something like this : I double check this models : OpenBuilds Sphinx 1050 OpenBuilds WorkBee 1050 For this kind of work what you recommend ? I would like to know the opinions from the maker and experience persons. Other question is related with the Z- Axis, how deep this machine can go ? Finally, what is your opinion about Shapeoko ? is worth it to compare with other openbuild machines? Because now I'm trying to find the pros / cons of the both machines, the future machine is going to be to build didgeridoos, in similiar way that you see on the photo. I'll defer to the experienced craftsmen as to the feasibility for your target project. However, for a simple comparison of the stock machines, including the Z Axis height, I've attached the quick reference guides below for these machines. I'm also new here, I like the Workbee 1050 as well, mostly because it seems to be a popular design as well as the footprint works in my shop. Exodon, which did you go with? Are you happy with your choice? Any tips for a newbie getting started with CNC?
Hi In the end I decided to go for the workbee..After checking so many videos I think the construction is more strong and the flexibility to have different height of the spoil board is great feature( I need to work a lot with the z axis height ). Other detail is the y axis...looks stronger with the double wheels system... However I didn't order yet. I'm building first a good bench and a vaccum system and then a sound isolation because I will use the machine at home. So only after that I will order the machine, otherwise I get excited with cnc and then my house is going to look a jungle lol. By the way because I live in Netherlands I will order via ooznest (Uk)...and is going yo be 1000 x 750 screw version. I'm going to use the cnc to build music instrument ( didgeridoo )... and you ?
Thanks for the reply! In truth, I don't need a CNC, I just like the idea of having one. Looking at all the projects there are plenty of things I would look to use this for. I'm hoping to setup an online store to sell small hand (and possibly custom) items. For instance (but not limited to): coasters, trivets, cutting/bread/serving trays, bowls, ornaments, jewelry, signs, etc. My wife is crafty so I can envision there being things she'll want, for instance, she loves those little wooden houses, which we always add a light to. I've got an order right now for three of them and I could use a CNC machine to help batch these out easily (and then make them for others to sell). I could see this being helpful to make shop jigs too (clamps, knobs, zero-clearance inserts, etc).
