That stuff is slightly elastic, I think they also use it to bond car windshields etc. I wonder if it is rigid enough to really stiffen the X beams since it has a max. elongation of 250%, meaning it can stretch. Here is a link to the technical data sheet http://www.bostik.com.au/_upload/ressources//bostik_new/simson/tds/simson_isr_70-03_280513.pdf.
For stiffening I would choose either bolting thru the profiles or bonding it with epoxy (or both..). Epoxies have a tensile elongation of 3% to 8%.

Your driver board is ready and tested, works perfect and should run your 2watt diode @ about 1.8 watts

Be sure to have cooling fans in your control panel as the cooler the board runs the better output you receive ;)

Robert, which software are you going to use to run the controller you have?

Right now I am using GRBL Controller. I got it because of the price nad it was easy to get while working on the machine. Once completed I might go for Mach3.

And with what hardware controller you use it?

I was fortunate enough to bump into the CNC xPro website after hearing it mentioned here and bought one. It has been great for a GreenHorn so far!!

I was more interested in the software used for the Planet CNC MK2/4 controller, since that's the controller I bought.

naah.. I have little different approach to that question. Elongations more than tiny fractions of % would anyway be destructive for whole machine.

bond is in neutral axis for bending so basically its only going to see shear stresses. Area for glue in my case is about 75cm * 1.5cm * 3 pcs, so near 34.000 square mm of glued area. If G is ~1.2@10% strains --> near 0 strains G is much higher, lets estimate ~2Mpa. With linear assumptions with Shear force of 1000 N planar movement in glued plane is about 0.007mm with assumptions thickness of glue 0.5mm. if consider 10 kg (force 100N) flex in glue would be only 0.0007mm. Just hope I remembered formula correct ;) Effect of glue stiffness is again relative to other stiffness, longer X will become the effect of adding anything between there will stand up more clearly. Anyway I must admit I didnt think this in any analytical way before now. I looked datasheet also earlier, but I was really looking for bonding charasteristics....

True next step effort for stiffening x-package would be to glue sheets to most outer sidewalls. as they are most further from neutral they will really bring stiffness. Thats my next plan if I will find out its really worth of doing. But for longer X, considering something like that could really be interesting as 1st place...

I'm sure you know what you're doing. Let us know how it turns out with the glue. Very interesting to hear.

Well I don't know about that, just trying to do best guesses....
Well as initial putting glue between profiles so I don't have any experience about difference without.

True experience to this discussion will be coming from those guys who are building like X = 100cm machines and who they have managed to handle issues. So looking fw. to hear more from them.
I´m still so newbie to OX and high speed machining that I haven't even go time to stress my machine further. Like pushing it to aluminum.

But for conventional machines and cutting speeds overweight is overpower E=mc2 :)

    * Information about the CNC USB control software can be found here:
    http://www.planet-cnc.com/index.php?page=software
Both the Controller board and the Software License are included as a bundle when you buy the board.

    * Download the full version of the software here to try out:
    http://www.planet-cnc.com/index.php?page=download
You can unlock the start button with your licence to have full access to the software.

    * Check out the forum for tech question and updates:

Thanks Mark! BTW, is there any other software that can be used with that controller?

@Prauk More then welcome glad to be a help.
Unfortunately there in none to my knowledge but I think your best bet would be to ask Andrej on the forums as he is the creator of the software and hardware.

    Hey guys,
Just a heads up to let you know that the OX plate models (V-Slot OX_Build_77) hole spacing's have been updated to allow for a tighter pre-load on the eccentrics. The original spacing works but it uses most of the adjustment allowance of the eccentrics and we wanted to be sure that there was more then enough adjustment room to work with, So now there is.
Special thanks goes to @Robert Hummel for originally catching this and also who's AI plates we used to fix it :)
You can download the new version under the Files tab at the top of the OX build page.
If anyone would like to help out by sharing different formats of these new plate layouts that others could use, for instance CamBam, etc.. please send them to me and I will add them to the build files.
    Thank you
    Mark

BAM ! Some fiber in yo face lol

SG-50 is a non-asbestos ceramic refractory reinforced with continuous fibers to
increase the toughness, reliability, and overall performance of the ceramic composite. SG-50 can withstand extreme thermal shock, is chemically inert, unaffected by moisture, and non-wetting to non-ferrous metals.

This is most welcomed in regards to the front X gantry plate where, at least with myOX, I had trouble getting enough of the "pre-load" on the wheels holding the Z length of V-slot. I have the previous spacing and myOX has one eccentric (top one) at "full" and there's just enough pressure to have the wheel touch and be usefull... This is in the 20x60 configuration. I did not try the 20x40 configuration.

I've discussed a few other tweaks, like a 20x80 configuration and, as others have shown in recent posting, a 4th set of wheels to get a wider grip of the Z V-slot. Not that 4 set of wheels is needed, but the extra spacing between top and bottom wheels could do wonders for those who want to do more than 1" or so deep work.

Nice to see, and possibly be part of, the evolution and permutations of the OX.

    Hi Mark
My set of plates that I got from Chris(great plates) is the earlier version and I have the same problem with the Z-Axis eccentrics. In your opinion what would be the easiest solution to accomplish and provide the same amount of adjustment as in the updated plate files?
    Thanks

    Hi My,

Builders who had trouble getting the wheels tight enough were successful using eccentrics on all 6 wheels, not just the 3 per the original design.

To fix this issue simply drill your spacer block mounting holes in the x plate a tad bigger.
Then tighten the spacer block while pushing inward.
No need for extra hardware ;)

You can try two things which should get you working :

    1) I adjusted top and bottom eccentric first, then adjusted the middle one. This got myOX going. I do have to check for squareness (Z at 90 degrees with X).

    2) could add eccentrics to the other side, at least top and bottom wheels. Squareness might be a bit tricker to get.

    Test fit went well :D

No movement with eccentrics not tensioned.
This fiber board is just as stiff as aluminum but a lot lighter
Didn't enjoy milling it at all, but it is what it is :zipit:
This kit will be a surprise in the making ;)

Hi @mybuild14 I think the above advice is great and should get you back on track.
hmmm now we have to try and guess :)
Nice job on this plate Robert!

Oh, I can imagine you didn't like the milling of the fiber plates! Itchy stuff.

Actually, I think that when my OX is ready to rock I will have a try on Wood/Epoxy composite plates.

Looks and sounds great. A bit of weight loss, just fat, not muscle.

    How thick is it ?

 Will there be a choice of colours ?

Could laminate a couple of colours to give the OX that special look with more muscle and no weight gain ?
It should be easier and probably cheaper than trying to anodize the aluminum version.

Well, my plates just arrived today from a company just outside of Calgary. Thank you Chris @Protodrake for pointing me in that direction! 1/4" Aluminium cut with "A friggin laser beam". That makes only the 8mm Threaded ACME rod, and the TinyG left to come in. They should be here in a couple days. It's almost 22:00 now, so I'll see how far I get on my build tonight!!
