So, not as Huge as it looks. Mmmm :jawdrop:
Still, looks like there's a lot of room in there. I'll save that dealer.

    Hi all :)
After investing in this kit, I'm considering getting it coated/plated for protection and long life.
Could you recommend a preferred type for CNC applications, I was thinking about sending the kit for nickel plating?
A tad new to CNC, commencing in building my first CNC in the coming weeks.

    Thanks for any help :)
And cheers to Robert and Mark, Amazing work.

I would say anodize or powder coat them.
I personally would powder coat :)

My brother in law is helping out cause he works part time at powdercoater.

I scored some anti graffiti finish which is a lot smoother. Ill post some pics when I get them done.

Just be sure the holes are papered so no coating gets inside.
You may have to re-tap the m5 holes if coating gets inside

    PM Sent ;)

We'll I had some free time to start the controller side of things
Here you see the four stepper drivers mounted to a aluminum bracket that will mount in the controller housing
They are held in place with M3 hardware and have thermal paste between them and the bracket.
Should also aid in heat exchange keeping things cool, not that they will be set to their max of 4.5 amps
Rather 2.8 as the openbuilds motors call for :)

They will be controlled from a standard BOB with parallel port connection and Mach3

Robert, when you get to putting this all together if you would be so kind as to document how all the extras (limit switches, etc.) connect into this board, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Gday all,

Hahaha pink powder-coat, Naaa as tempting that is. So far I know you can find black, white, yellow and red.
I will post the name and model of powder used when I get the info.

I got a bunch of rollie cigarette filters from another mate, perfect for plugging up 5mm holes, though I have drill taps and taps on the way just in case.

Robert, Can you let me know what your drag chain is resting on? Is it a piece of 20x40?
If it is 20x40 v rail, I guess it also improves stiffness quiet well?
Anyone else with suggestions or recommendations please let them at me ;)

    Thanks

    It connects to the rear 20x40 and a 90 black bracket, 2 x 8mm M5, 1 x nut and 1x tee nut

On the X side 70 mm M5, 1x 1/4 spacer and nut to lock down the threads

Bits snapping is not a good thing at all.
First thing is the end mills from eBay have never really worked for me and snap fast
Next how fast is your spindle operating "RPM"?
One other thing is chip extraction did you keep things clean?
Do you have a link for the end mill used?
A higher spindle speed would be good but if you don't have it then just keep the chip load proper and you should be ok.
I use 55 degree helix end mills and the performance over the standard end mills is night and day , the chip evacuation is incredible , the chips push up the flute and are thrown clear of the part , they can handle heavier cuts , there's less chatter and generally the surface finish is much better due to the shear the tool provides with that much of a cutting angle .
My preference is to avoid the use of standard end mills for any aluminum cutting .

I have a local supply KBC tool that I go to.
Little costly but bits last a lot longer
I also have a new type I'm about to try on the next few sets of OX plate sets, they have a ti-coat to improve life and cut.
A 1/8" two flute high helix is $25 after taxs
Have yet to snap one, have snapped all eBay bits

A note when using high helix bits, be sure to secure your work well.
If the bit hits a soft spot or chips it can pull up with a lot of force

The RPM is way to high you want about 10,000 rpm
Next the alexi bits not right for the job and the inventambles are for acrylic

The last bit on the page is what your looking for at a fair price for quality

One other thing I can think of would be the endmill is to far out side the chuck.
Only the cutting surface and 1/6 " of the shank should stick out of the chuck

Robert, Where are you getting the fober board? That looks nice. Is it easier to mill than the aluminum?

I got it from a local electrical shop that was throwing out a bunch of old switch gear.
It is super easy to mill but hard on the bits
Got the Z done just need a 10" length of open builds lead screw to finish :)

    Hello Robert,

I like the work and add-ons you made since the original design. I am sure by now you have a pretty good idea what is involved in milling these, so I'd like to know if you are still considering milling kits for people.

I have 0 experience in CNC, but I designed and built my own 3D printer, so I am not that far off. The printer I made, I had the alu waterjet. While it worked, the inherent bevel made while cutting made me work more than I had anticipated adjusting the parts

    http://www.thingiverse.com/jayftee/designs

That is why I am looking at CNCs.

    Let me know.

    Thank you

    Jeff
