I just put 24v to my 1 day old BlackBox. Red USB LED flashing & BlackBox icon is green. OpenBuild Controls sees its as well. Fan is not running. Is there a thermostat on fan? Unrelated, but build assembly was easy and straightforward. Probably 30-45min, unless you drop & lose an M3x6.
It turns out Power switch must to be for the Muscle board. Brain board appears to be powered from USB. I noticed the power switch was off, even though PC was communicating with the brain board. I turned on the power switch and fan started running.
Even with power off, USB stays connected and powering the logic side: helps with testing/programming/power failures, etc as the controller's logic can run without needing a PSU connected. Once power is ON, the onboard switchmode converter provides a more stable 5v to the logic side (usb power can be flaky) Fan is a 24v fan, needs PSU connected and power switch in ON position
I'm curious, when you shut off the 24v power, does the fan keep running for you at a reduced speed? It's like the fan starts running on 5v. I can stop it with my finger and it won't start again. If I give it a little push it'll start turning again.
Slightly different fan than during prototying. V2.4 will have an extra diode. As is doesnt affect anything
At first I did not notice fan was still running off USB power. Its so quiet at 5v, that I assumed it had stopped. The fan on my unit acts the same as you described.
All expected. Some fans spin up on the little backfeed current through the buck converter, most dont. Either way, in the next batch theres an extra diode just to avoid confusion
Hi All, Hope you are all keeping well. Yeah we have a black box here - we powered it up and the fan started smoking. Has anyone else had this trouble? Should i order another fan and test it again? Tim

@Rick 2.0 is correct, reach out to the store and they'll help you out Just an extra note, 100% sure you had the fan plugged in with correct polarity? (Have seen before where incorrect polarity caused this to happen)
