Hi Ryan, The plates are made out of 1/4 aluminum and 3/8 aluminum(top and bottom x axis plates). I powder coated the plates. The color is called anodized blue. Prismatic Powders - ANODIZED BLUE
I guess I'm just a dummy on how to use theses fills. I have the drawings of the plats but no dimensions. How can I get them? ( see the files ((spartacus- inspire- step-filezip)) but can not open them. thanks Ray
Ray, Depends on what software you're using. You can try fusion 360 free, open the files there, then get dimensions that way.
How has that upper beam helped with deflection of your tool end? It seems like a way to get a little more out of the openbuilds parts without going to a different style of extrusion.
Great instructions. Do you have to drill and tap the edge for the rail stabilizer thing on top of the X axis carriage? I would flip the plates around so the bearings are on the outside. That way you can add some tension to your lead screws. I learned this the hard way. I went with a longs motor 3 axis 425 oz stepper kit from ebay. I bought a smaller stepper for the Z. It comes with the drivers and power supply. I got some Mesa cards. I put them in an old desktop. I run linuxCNC.
It feels solid, hopefully cutting material this weekend and do some tests. Just finished up wiring it tonight.
Hi jack, I milled out the plates with a different cnc machine. I didn’t add up the cost yet as I bought a lot of extra stuff I didn’t need..lol. I’m going to be doing a detailed price list, but the part list should give you an idea if you go thru and add to cart on openbuilds store.
Hi Chad, Yup they need to be drilled and tap. Thanks for the tip about tensioning the lead screws. I went with openbuilds 345 oz motors and picked up a 5 pack of tb6600 drivers on eBay, using an adruino uno and just installed estlcam on it to run it. Linuxcnc looks nice, may have to give it a try.
Hi James, Build came out great, need to do some minor tweaks. I will be updating my build. A have milled out a few things and very happy with the results. Just now moving onto milling aluminum. Very first project was an Aztec calendar.

Hi Nabeel, Good luck on the build! If I were to build again, I would probably put the bearings on the outside. Might want to keep that in mind when you mill the plates, also might make it easier if you go that way so you don’t need to mill on both sides.

Hi Chris, I may redo my plates for the bearings to be on the outside. The drawings that are uploaded would still be the same, you’re just not flipping the plates over to mill out the bearing pocket. Hmm.. I think I would definitely add endstops. Before I milled anything, I accidentally drove my machine crashing into my front plates. Those motors are strong. Bent my Y axis lead screws, so I had to replace them without any miles on them..opps I am thinking about redesigning my z plates for easy mounting a laser. Dust collection is a must for me. I’m slowly working on a dust boot for my machine. Overall I’m pretty happy with my machine.
