hi all I have got a black box control board, build was easy build but i am having a problem when i connect the laptop to the black box and turn it on it shuts the laptop down my guess is that the box is sending power back to the usb and over loading it, I have look through the instruction several time and must be missing some thing or over looking something, how do i go about switching this off, thanks for your help in advance
What happens if you run the laptop without its power supply, ie just on batteries? (and I mean actually unplug the PSU from the laptop). If it works ok like that then it points to a grounding issue. Can you turn one of the mains plugs over?
Power cannot backfeed from the board to USB. But i guess you could have a short or something else. But first: 1) Try a different PC 2) Try a different USB Cord 3) Try with the Blackbox power switch in the OFF position 4) Try with the Blackbox power switch in the ON position (And PSU on) 5) Take the BRAINS of the MUSCLE and powering the BRAINS only off USB try to connect Lets see if we can eliminate one of the non-blackbox components first. During pre-shipment each BlackBox gets connected to USB to flash Grbl, so it would have passed in that test once before (working USB) If you still can't get it up, http://support.openbuilds.com/support/home will sort you out
Right had a bit of a play this evening and have found this I have to turn the black box on psu off connect the lap top then power the psu on and it starts fine also the wiring diagram for my stepper motors is not quite right worked out the pairs and a bit of trial and error and now are all working fine on a big plus are so much quieter and smoother than before good job open build team time to start cutting

FYI, I had the same problem. My laptop shut down twice. (posted this separately before I found this post) I thought at first that the USB cable may be too close to the PSU cable. It seems the order in which you connect and power on devices is important. Once I had everything powered up, I'm still having problems but I'll follow that in my other post. Just wanted chime in to let you know, that I experienced the same problem with my laptop.
Yeah some USB ports can be oversensitive to the EMI from the "power turn on" Rare though. If you have a sensitive machine, either try a different PC or just power on the controller first.
