Hello, I have ordered my new CNC 2 days ago, but of course I goanna need to buy router bits for it. I have the makita RT0700CX3J and my first reflex was to also buy my router bits on ooznest at the same times as my cnc/ So, I have added this set of bits: Solid Carbide End Mill Starter Kit - UK but apparently it will not be compatible with my machine because of the Shank Diameter wich is in inch and not in mm. My makita is provided with a collets of 6mm and 8mm. I really don't know about this topic and most of the post I find in this forum are for the US or UK standard. I would like the same kind of kit as the one from ooznest for a budget of max 125€ if possible. What are the brand and models usefull to start? It is for wood working btw. Regards, Benjamin V.
If you are working with wood, @Benjamin Vg, then standard router bits from your local hardware store will do. Just make sure that they have a cutting edge on the tip so that they will cut straight down as well as sideways. Alex. Also Benjamin, if you have ordered them from Ooznest, get in touch with them promptly to cancel if they won't fit your router - saves having to send them back.
Many people make the mistake of buying expensive bits to start with, only to break them straight away, because of lack of knowledge and setting up the machine incorrectly. If you look around this site you'll read over and over again about making this error. Okay, you've bought them, so keep them for much later when you know how to get the best out of them. In the meantime, shop around the likes of eBay and Amazon for cheap, but appropriate bits. Go Chinese if you're not in a rush for them. They are reliable generally, and you get quite a lot for your money.
If you are in the U.S. then go to Harbor Freight and buy the bit set for $75. If you go to their website and look for End Mills you will find the set and it get even better as there is almost always a coupon for 20% off of any single item. Good reviews for these inexpensive end mills.
Just a thought @Benjamin Vg - if you want to do any fine detail work you will probably also need some 1/8 inch bits - you will need an adapter for your router collet. I can't help you with a direct link to a source - I'm in the UK and my router collet is in inches - but I suggest you look on E-bay - there are 6mm to 1/8 inch adapters available. Alex.
Hello, I finally found an adapter for the 8mm to 1/4 inch in the makita catalog (référence: 763637-1 if someone need it in the future). But I didn't find the 1/8 one. does it exist for the routers or is it more for the dremels? I have found this site and this pack: Pack decoupe CNC special debutants the responsible is looks really great. But I am not sure that the pack really match my needs: no ball bits for example. They are usually a sleeve - 6mm outside - 1/8" inside with slots that allow the 6mm collet to compress them - look on E-bay. Alex.
You have both 6mm and 8mm collets. Adapters for both are available on E-bay - the adapter fits in your existing collet. Alex.
Only place I know of making makita collets is Elaire they are very good quality but not cheap and neither is shipping! You want an 1/8" for sure, bits are very cheap (less carbide). Cheers Gary
I have found the collet in my local Makita dealer here in Belgium they can have in 2-3 days so that is not an issue
