I have posted this before and I apologize for being repetitive. The previous post got lost in the mix with other posts about unrelated information. What I am looking for: A list of items needed to change my machine to gantry versus a moving cutting surface. Background: Some time ago (has it been three years??) I built the C-Beam Plate Maker. I enlarged it to 39x39. I use Acme on all three Axis. I want to get rid of the moving cutting surface and make it a gantry machine. I am totally lost as to exactly what I need to do this and I need help, like really need help figuring this out. If pics are needed that's fine. My machine is based exactly off of the original Plate maker design, just enlarged to 1000x1000... I apologize for the private message I sent on this subject to you Rick2.0. Help! Please!
Have you checked out the LEAD machine build? It also mainly consists of C Beam actuators. Might be easiest to convert to, no custom plates, all off the shelf bits.
I looked at one project that was never completed. But I will certainly check again right now! Thanks!
Need pics of what you already have to work with. You may be able to get away with as little as a single C-beam actuator. If you already have 2 actuators holding up the bed you won't even need that. The main question is what do you plan to cut, what type of projects do you have in mind? You mention in the PM that you're considering belts which may be more effort than just adding another screw drive. If you do intend to go with belts is the current machine capable of cutting plates?
I know Ill need at least one since I'm running a single. I have the old plate maker setup. size just changed to 1000x1000. Nothing else was changed. I have never cut plates. My vets group only uses it for signs and that type of project. But I need a larger more stable cutting area which tells me I need to make it a gantry. For example, I currently have a sign Im working on that is about 22" by 32". and the deflection is terrible at that size on the plate maker, if that makes sense. I usually make projects about that size. I dont mind buying plates and the parts I just need to know what I need to actually change it over. I think I need to upgrade the controller also (Have the old X1, I believe) So at some point I can also use a probe. I also know Ill need to lengthen or add wiring if I do this versus the plate maker having it all in the rear?
Sketchup file attached showing recommended revisions. You'll need to compare the parts shown against what you already have. Note: Disregard the motor size shown, they were already on the base drawing. Just get one more like you already have.
Based on what I can see in the pictures I have revised the suggested modification. The mods are based on using the existing 20x60 framing in the base. Also attached is a shopping list. It is based on salvaging 10 regular V-wheels and 22 corner brackets from the existing build. You'll also need to find a 33-7/8" x 42" x 3/4" spoil board locally. I left the ends a little long for clamping oversize boards. The extra 20mm screws are for attaching it to the base.
Thank you so very much. I have ordered all of the items on your list. I look forward to making the upgrade.
