Hi all, CNC was running great, I just bought a few sheets of birch plywood so I can make some 'proper' things until a few days ago. I did a Mac OS update and decided I wanted to do a clean install so I can start from fresh and organise my workflow better as until now it's just a complete mess.

Reinstall everything afterwards [UGS, Java, the FDTI VCP drivers] and I'm getting 'Grbl has not finished booting' and also 'No firmware found' when plugged in to the CNC. I've spent a lot of time trying not to come here asking for help, I've reached my limit of how frustrated I can be.

I've read that simple things fixed one of the other thing for others like changing to baud rate down to 9600 or the connection driver to JSerialComm.

I wonder if the drivers are installing properly on Catalina. My ports available are cu.usbserial-DN01RCIO and tty.usbserial-DN01RCIO and not a 'COM3' etc - not that I can remember what it was before.

I'm convinced I'm going to have to reflash to xPro with a new Grbl but I haven't researched how to do that yet and I'm just hoping to find a little more guidance to make sure it's actually necessary before I try it.

    Thanks in advance guys

Are you sure you are selecting the correct port? I know on M

ac it can be a bit more confusing, but look for the FTDI device

    Grbl 1.1 uses 115200 - can't be changed

Don't! You worked on the mac, so obviously that's the thing that changed
Flashing incorrectly will kill the board, and its far from likely to the thing that changed here. Rule number one in troubleshooting: What was changed> In this case the mac reinstall

Just one non-mac thing you can try: Disconnect everything except USB from the BlackBox, and try connecting, just in case a faulty wiring mistake is only now showing itself.

    Other than that:
Checkout RevK®'s rants: FTDI USB Serial MacOS Catalina Resource Busy error as a possibility (driver installed, but not loaded)

In UGS? There are four possible ports it displays. The two I named and the other two which are bluetooth-something of an other, and not really relevant in this case.
Rule number one in troubleshooting: What was changed > In this case the mac reinstall
I've gone back to Mojave hoping the it might be security and permissions that makes the difference and no luck. I'm currently downloading High Sierra. At some point this process wasn't a hassle and I'm willing to go back to that time if possible!

Gave that a try and no luck unfortunately. I will try disconnecting all others wires

I thought this was going to be in the ticket! I looked in the extensions which I didn't know I could and it says Notarised/Unknown Loaded/No. So clearly although the install process said it was success, it obviously was. I removed and reinstalled the drivers with the security and privacy settings unlocked to behind with and still the same result.

    Thanks Peter!

You can play the elimination game (check the list of ports, with the controller connected to USB, and not connected) to note which ID appears when it is connected, but is not present in the list, when it is not plugged in.

Yeah, this might be the key, until that shows its loaded, its not using the right driver then? Not sure how to fix it though

Ports that are listed then disconnected are cu.Bluetooth-Incoming-Port & tty.Bluetooth-Incoming-Port.

Ports that appear when connected are cu.usbserial-DN01RCIO and tty.usbserial-DN01RCIO.

I'm definitely going to keep on that path. It's not the best plan I'm hoping that if I go back to the OS I originally installed them on it will be a work around.

Okay so I've gone back as far as I can't. I can install drivers from anywhere and they're still not loaded.

I got my hands on a Windows laptop yesterday to try it out and I'm getting a lot of the same things. I haven't used Windows in about 15 years and I'm used to classic UGS so it feels a little alien to me. But the laptop sees the port which is a plus. It comes in at COM3. I increased the baud to 115200 before moving to UGS. I connect on those and it's offline. Still 'No firmware found' appears when I try to pull up my $$ values 'Grbl has not finished booting'

Pulling my hair out at this point XD

Did you through any of this try reflashing grbl?

    as you mentioned

and it is very easy to lose the firmware off an xpro as it uses a different chip to all the other Grbl instructions online (atmega328p default vs atmega328pb on an xPro) when you try to flash it without understanding that difference.

If not, anything else happened that could have caused the board to loose firmware: You can send it over to Mike at Spark Concepts to get it reflashed / repaired: (He often does for users) Contact US

To be honest I've been trying to not think about it. After days of trying things and failing I don't like my chances.

It won't fix the driver issues on Mac OS but I've emailed my local suppliers about upgrading to a BlackBox to see what they think. I don't know if they will do repairs but they might not get back to me until Monday so I could have the weekend to decide whether I want to try flashing the controller myself.

Thanks for your replies. It was much less stressful to have someone bouncing ideas back to me.
