Hey Guys, I just bought the new BlackBox, assembeld it, connected it to my openbuilds meanwell 24v power supply, connected all motors and switches, the usb cable... and nothing. It says motors enabled , but the power light dosen,t turn on and the usb light either any ideas? Did i just get a bad one or there is a common issue there?
Do a test with JUST USB cable connected. Incorrectly wired accesories are often the reason the board does not boot up, particularly incorrectly wired limits. If it connects with just USB, then check your wiring against docs.openbuilds.com/blackbox If it still does not connect, screenshot the Serial Log
OK good, so USB is fine. Lets tackle Power - did you set the 220/110v switch (big yellow sticker on the top of the PSU points to it, comes with directions) - check wiring - check you got the polarity (+/-) correct - what lights up on the PSU?
So. PSU was at 230. Switched it to 115! Works, powers the black box. So now, the Y motors are under tension when connected to Control. But, the Z and X axis are not responding. I also made sure ever wires were connected accordingly to the documents. I have a 1015 LEAD Cnc. And I use the X motor placed on the left when facing the machine instead of right. I used a custom template in the GRBL settings to invert the x motor. And when I entered the Lead 1010 at first, it also inverted the Z axos If I try to jog, only the Y axis are responding. But they don't move, they only jog in place or the axis dosent move. But when disconnected, I can move all xis turning the leadscrew with my finger tips without problem. So nothing is preventing the motors to move the axis. I also have a red indicator lite up underneath the X axis voltage pot.
Classic symptom of a) only 3 of the 4 wires make contact or b) don't trust the wire codes (only valid if its motors from us, in the past year or so - motors from old stock / different suppliers will have different color codes) - identify the coil pairs with a multimeter instead Explains why it doesnt move: Red LED indicates - short circuit (check wiring) - overcurrent (adjust current down a little) - overheat (check fan is running, and turn current down a little: OpenBuilds BlackBox 4X Documentation) - undervoltage: If PSU is not outputting enough power (check with multimeter that you are getting 24v) Driver goes into protection mode because of a fault, and disables itself
Alright so Yes, color codes were different, my cnc is a SPAM 3d. found the propper codes. Voltage out of the meanwell is dead on 24v. The Y and y2 axis are working fine, jogging and all with the new wire connections. but all motors are the same, and yet even though i rewired everything with the new colors, still the X axis indicator light is on, and i try upping and lowering the voltage, letting it cool for hours... it won't go off... Than, the Z axis even though the indicztor is not on had almost no voltage going to it. really weird. so only the y is working, can't debug the X nor the z.
I know you said all motors are the same, but just to be sure, did you verify that you found the coil pairs in the other two motors that are not working? SPAM may not spec motors to their requirements and may buy bulk from multiple sources depending on what is cheapest at the time so maybe the wire pairs bay be different.
As @Giarc said, SPAM have been known to supply steppers from different manufacturers in the same kit - check the pairs of wires for each coil with a multimeter. Stepper motors won't turn Alex.
Power cycle the setup to clear the fault led. It won't turn off automatically. Define the 'almost' part here please - what does it do Are their motors even to correct spec (right resistance, inductance, coil voltage, maybe faulty motor) Consider ordering known good quality Openbuilds motors
Yes, i checked every wire configurations for each motors, they all have the same code for the seperate coils. I've tried using the wire from the Y axis that works and drive the X & Z motor with it to make sure that using the same color code woudl work. the X-axis responded perfectly, but no matter how long i shut the power down and how many times, the x axis indicator is always on, i adjuted it at a lower rate, at a higher rate, nothing works... So there is no current going to the X motor at any time... For thye Z, using the same y connector from the black box i tried jogging the Z motor with the y control in the software like i did for the X. Nothing.. the Z motor will not move, even though i identified the coils and all... So clearly for the z axis, the motor is the problem... So i have no idea how to make the current cut off from the X-axis disable and engage again...
So, X motor works, i drived it with my Y connetion cable and jogged it with the Y controls in the software... so onlu the indicator that,s keeping it from working. The Z-axis motor dosen't react, but has the propper resistance and coils aren't broken or dammaged... but clearly this one dosen't react at all. Could it be that in you drivers, if voltage dosen't go to the z axis cause of a faulty motor, it then will eb be able to drive the X axis down the line or it is not possible?
Unplug the motor from that axis (so nothing connected) then power cycle - does it go out then? If not the driver may have been damaged As the indicator does indicate other issues as well: (faulty motor could show as dead short)
Done, and nothing, the light is still on, even after 30 min shut down and notthing connected ot the axis. What,s next? do i send it back for replacing the dammaged driver?
Well, I'd highly recommend getting a replacement motor (something damaged that driver, so if you don't address that, a replacement will do just the exact same) speak to the vendor you bought from (http://support.openbuilds.com/support/home if it was direct from us) - they can ship the replacement with your motor order if need be

It still dosen,t explain why there is no current going to the Z axis though. only about .09v heading to each coils... really strange. everything else has plenty. but not the z motor
I see they are already attending to it Not sure, but suspect something in your setup caused some damage, each board goes through QA. Either way, replacement Muscle will sort that one out too

Test first, but if it runs the wrong way, easy just flip the switch for Direction Invert on any axis going the wrong direction yes
That's great. So if I understand correctly, jogging + should bring the axis Further from the motor and - should bring it back towards the motor? I'm sorry for so many questions, it's the first time I get such a project done. Having lots of fun though!
X- brings endmill toward the left of the sky stock, x+ should move the endmill toward the right of the stock. Y- moves endmill toward the front of the material, y+ toward the back of the stock Z- pushes endmill deeper into the stock, z+ lifts it up out of the stock. Cartesian coordinate system - Wikipedia Note all moves are relative to the tool, not necessarily the machine (on moving table machines. It feels 'reversed')
I'm wondering now that i have the openbuilds motors, and blackbox... why the lead 1010 setting dosen't move the axis in the good directions than? I had to remove the invert on the z axis and invert the y axis to makje it go the way you discribed it.
Thats why those switches exist in Grbl Settings inside control: the color codes just identify the wires belonging to each coil, but not neccesarilly the exact order of coil +/- polarity. So easy, flip the switches as needed to make the machine match the cartesian coordinate standards.
