After many years of excellent performance, my dealt 611 router finally gave out. So I am currently looking for a new router. I’m looking at getting the Bosch 1617Evs. I’m not sure it will fit in the open build mounts. I think it’s a larger diameter. Has anyone mounted this router and if so, what did you use for the mounts?
I've been using a Factory Reconditioned Makita RT0701C. It has a diameter of 65mm and won't fit the standard OpenBuilds mounts. I've been happy with it so far and the price is very good. (I managed to pick one up for $69). I believe it has electronic RPM control so it tries to keep a constant RPM even if the load changes. I've been using a 65mm clone of the OpenBuilds mount but I'm planning to switch to using one of these spindle mounts of ebay. (Spindle Motor Mount Bracket Clamp 65mm/ 80mm Diameter For CNC Engraver Machine | eBay) The benefit if the Bosch would be the lower min RPM. I hope this helps.
Thanks! There are three reasons I’m looking at the Bosch, 1. 2.25 HP, Needed for cutting aluminum 2. It accepts multiple collet sizes from 1/8”, 1/4”, 3/8” and 1/2”. 3. Rpm management. It goes all the way down to 8000 rpm. If I could find a smaller router that did all of that, maybe even less HP, I’d do it instead. But for the options I want, that’s what I’m stuck with. Thanks again!
I see. I’m not sure power will be an issue on a hobby grade machine. You other points are valid though. Especially larger collets could open up to some interesting bit choices. The cheap Chinese mounts might come in a suitable size. You could also see if @Chris Laidlaw can make a mount for your machine.
That Bosch router is interesting...but it weighs about 4 pounds more than the Dewalt!...will that be a problem?
The Hitachi M12VC also has quite a following and may be worth a look. The big question here is what are you hanging it from?
I guess I will find out.... I’ve built a large C-beam machine style machine. It has the larger belt drive. Nema 23 z axis motor. With the XL plates. So I’m hoping it will handle the extra weight. I’ve designed a mount out of aluminum for it, but I need a spindle to mill it, to mount my spindle (smacks my forehead!).
So tonight I stopped by a store and picked up a 1617. It is larger and heavier! I placed it on top of my old dewalt 611 that is still in the z axis mount just to see if the stepper would be able to lift it, it had no problem lifting both of them at the same time. As for causing deflection, I will have to tram it again anyway. I also found a mount for it from cnc routerparts.com. Bosch 1617 Router Mount - CRP142-00-02 | CNCRouterParts Looks promising! Has anyone purchased from them before? Thought?
Got some good news, I ended going with a cheaper mount for the 1617 from eBay. Its a 3 piece design, but seems to do the job! Now I have to pull the old mounts off and get the new one fitted up.
So I got the mount replaced and the new router is up and running. I had a SuperPID on the Dewalt before, but now since the Bosch goes down to 8K, I might end up just taking it out. Here are some pics of the new setup.
Your setup looks great! How's the Bosch been working out for you? I'm in the design stages and already have this router. I'm thinking about using it for my build.
Any update on the 1617? Considering the same. Link for the eBay site you bought the mount? I’m having trouble finding.
It is not an eBay site. The link above that he posted for the mount still works. Looking for a new spindle. It is $121. For a little more than that price you could buy either a DeWalt or Makita and a mount.
In post num 8 he links the expensive Avid mount, but, in post num 9 he references a cheaper Ebay mount. This is what is shown in the pictures.
I searched "bosch 1617 router mount" on ebay and found this. It says it has models compatible to ObenBuilds machines. It looks like the one he has in the picture. Designed to order CNC Router/Spindle Mounting Kit | eBay People speak highly of this ebay store here on the forum.
