The magnetic clip will not adhere to the endmill. What is my problem and how do I fix the problem?? The clip will adhere to a another magnet. I’m using a 2.2 spindle on 110V. A standard .25 endmill. Thanks in advance for any help…
I installed CONTROL 1.0.238 yesterday & played with the new probing.option that determines tool diameter. Very cool! It calculated my .250" single flute end mill to be 5.85mm (.230"). Is it just reality that certain bit geometries (like single flute) are hard to accurately determine?
Yes, mechanical niggles like plate slightly moving, or flutes etc - should still be pretty well centered though
I bought a Vermont Gauge (.25") because The single flutes were hard for me to zero perfectly. Depending on how the endmill was turned could affect the zero point.
Ok.... So back to the drawing board. Started to set up for a project and the XYZ Touch Probe Plus failed. I cannot get the probe to work. Took the magnet off and clamped the wire directly on the collet nut (NOTHING). Taped the bare wire to the plate and got a inconsistent connection. Put an alligator clip on and get on and off results. Checked the wiring for tight connections and all is well. The probe simply fails 4 out of 5 times. WHAT'S WRONG??? OR SHOULD I SAY WHAT IM I DOING WRONG???
1) test it out on the troubleshooting tab - allows you to see the status light of whether the firmware sees the connection or not - it just needs to cleanly conduct the signal from wire to plate. 2) Coated endmill by any chance? Perhaps your coating is not conductive? Use a different endmill that is conductive to probe, then switch out and zero Z manually. Or get yourself a guage pin as suggested above: Post some pics of your wiring too, maybe we see something you aren't thinking of
ok, I tried a different bit and tested it before probing and it made connection, then went to probe Z only and it failed. Please look at the pic's I've uploaded, I included one while taping the magnetic clip to the base, I have been using the troubleshooting tab all along for my testing. Something interesting happened while taking the pic while holding the parts by the wires in front of the monitor, the base accidently touched the monitor and the probe light came on. To make sure that was the case I did it again and the light came on. Another pic shows the alligator clip I tried with soldered connection with no luck. I have been using Whiteside CNC carving bits from a starter set 705, I just checked and they are carbide, would that make a difference?
Computer monitor as shown in pic. The prob made connection only when it touched the screen, otherwise it lost connection when it was not touching. Could you try touching your magnetic clip to the XYZ touch plate (or base) to see if you get a connection on your troubleshooting page?
No need to test that, thats literally how the probe works. Plate is GND, blue wire/magnetic clip = SIGNAL. When the SIGNAL is Grounded (touching GND) Grbl sees that pin go LOW and thus knows the probe is making contact. Recheck your wiring, we know it works for all the other users
Blue wire on the terminal near the Plate looks a little offcenter, maybe loose View attachment 46335 And this looks like a dry joint When soldering to nickle plated electronics, use a paste flux and enough heat to slow the solder onto the metal PS I don't see a picture of probe touching the monitor. But regardless, if thats the case, something is odd in the wiring I guess too
OK you have proved a point... When I touch the I have checked the wiring many times and if I tighten the leads any more I will strip the connections. I'm 100% sure of the wiring... What works for others is not working in my case. My question touching your magnetic clip to the XYZ touch plate (or base) Is exactly my problem, mine sometimes makes contact and but most of the time doesn't. I should be able to touch the two together and it should make contact not just once in a while but make contact every time. So should I put the blame on faulty wiring job at this point, if it's not a problem with the probe? I'm going to have an electrician check the wiring for any possible brakes and all my connections.
Well, the probe is a block of metal, attached to a wire. The clip is just a little metal casting, with a magnet inside, attached to a wire. The PCB just lights up the LEDS - doesnt play a role in the probing (indirectly only, adds a pullup resistor and noise filter to make the probe EMI immune, and lights the LEDs for cosmetics) - its so simple it can't be broken. V+ just powers the LEDs and Pull-up resistor. But a wire that snapped off inside the insulation, a bad termination, etc, are classic causes of "intermittent" circuit issues. That circuit is soooo simple. Stick a wire in SIG, and another in GND on the BlackBox side, touch them together to make the indicator go red on the troubleshooting tab. Thats ALL the probe does, when the endmill (wired to SIG via the magnet) is touched to Plate (wired to GND on the BlackBox) touches together
Check the wire going into the terminal that attaches to the magnet holder. I have the "puck" touch plate and the wire going into the clip broke off. I had to fix it.
Ok, so here are the results of the diagnostic testing… 1- The Magnetic Clip has no Magnet in it; the magnet was not delivered with the assembly. 2- Tested the SIG & GND on the BlackBox side; the green indicator light on the blackbox came on showing a signal was being found, but the green indicator on the troubleshooting tab did not turn red as it should have. So to me it would indicate a communication problem from the black box to the computer. 3- At this point things are a bit out of my expertise, with that said I will be contacting Open Builds support to see what they have to say. Contact http://support.openbuilds.com/support/home about any missing parts, but you did have it a couple days ago: So just check that the magnet isnt stuck to the collet or fell on the floor etc Regarding - Did you hold it long enough (takes a couple milliseconds to update the GUI, hold it for at least a few seconds) - Grbl itself responds immediately but the backend updates the GUI on a timed-loop - Is $6-Probe Pin Invert set to Zero as it should be? (Grbl settings tab) - Does the Limit switches update when you test them
Ok... Went out and picked up some magnets, they don't fit but they work. Limit switches work Probe worked with Z only and with XYZ I can not believe all we went through just because of a missing magnet Thanks for your patients working with me.... P.S Never did find the missing magnet
FYI... Was curious as to how clamping the clip to the spindle nut without the magnet worked and made connection in the beginning . After making the connection with the controller the first time, it worked on and off. So I did a little more testing and found out that the clip with the missing magnet had just enough magnetism on it to make somewhat of a connection and caused it to respond with the control box. There was not enough magnetism to hold its own weight up. It still puzzles me as to how the magnet was lost or packed and delivered without it.
Hi, I hope that I am posting in the right place. I am a newbie I had a problem with the XYZ probe Plus. I got an error and it needed a new bran board. I just wanted to know if I should home everything, then 0 everything, and move my endmill to the touch probe, and 0 everything again. At that point should I use the wizard to start the operation? Love OpenBuilds
If you are new to the hobby, I'd recommend not using the probe initially, start off with just SETZERO: initially. Build up some skill and familiarity Then start using the Probe:
