    I use a BB on an OX.. the software estimate will differ depending on the software and your settings..
    You can speed things up by optimizing your settings for speed (sounds obvious) and increasing your stepover.
    You can probably increase your acceleration and decrease your z safe height to save much time, increasing the stepover can have the biggest affect.
    Post your grbl settings and cut file if you don't mind sharing so we can take a look.

    i feel like an idiot i totally for got about the acceleration. that seems like it will fix my problem since when im jogging the machine im telling myself why is it so slow to start moving. It has been a long time since i have had to do this since i have been running mach 3 for close to 5 years with no issue

    Thats and Idea Andrew, stowage on the wall whilst not in use may overcome the vertical issues. best of both worlds. Will bear it in mind thanks.

    Hello guys. I need a tip on who can help, maybe someone has already asked but it is a lot to read. My Ox has nema 23 motors 12.6kg driver 1/8 of a step, if someone has a similar configuration they could pass feed-rate and how many mm of vertical and horizontal step (Ap and Ae) for a milling cutter, for example, 3mm.

    Feed-rates totally depend on what your cutting, what finish you want, bit size.. it is incredibly variable... FWIW, I'm looking into getting Gwizard exactly to be able to get the optimized feed rates and spindle speeds as per material, bit and finish I want...
    step/mm depends on pulley size, but OpenBUilds Control has a step/mm wizard.. basically you send a movement, say 100mm, then measure exactly how far it did move, then make the calc if it is off and substitute your values until they are correct ;-)

    Hi @Mark Carew & @Peter Van Der Walt (and others!),

    I've decided on building an 750x750mm OX as it is extendable much easier than a leadscrew rig ;-) Will be trying the double belt as in Buffalo and SS OX... ;-) Unless you have better suggestions for a belt driven CNC..? Although it is old, it seems a pretty good and solid build - will mainly be cutting wood, but will hopefully extend to max size in X (1500mm) and double Y (3000mm) in the future... (I am planning on adding some adjustable feet at the union between profiles, anyone done this already so I don't have to design from scratch?)

    Couple of questions..

    what advantage does the taller Z-plate give..? I have done the build in Fusion 360 (will share when finished!), and I notice that with the higher Z-plate, one actually gets less Z movement, as the upper lead screw motor bracket hits the higher edge of the Z-plate earlier..? Can just use a longer 20x60 and leadscrew, but curious if there is a better reason to use than being able to use 4 sets of wheel pairs instead of 3..? To get a bit more height (only wish about 40mm more), I was going to adjust the corresponding holes and edges on the Y-plates...

    Also, I see in the notes the comment that the Nema 17 is pretty near the limit, so I was thinking of a Nema 23 for Z, but the mounting plate for Nema23 is made for 20x80, and extends slightly to far "north" (there exists the possibility it may crash with the X-axis motor pulley if manages to lower enough - however I think it may first encounter problems with the router crashing with the work area before this happens - not quite got the router and spoiler board drawn out yet in Fusion, so still not sure..) - if it turns out to be a thing, was thinking of simply grinding off the offending couple of mms of the bracket, but that is still up in the air ;-) Could just use a 60mm Nema17 which would have about 20% more holding torque...

    And in the video show using a 20x40 on the rear of the X-axis, but BoM shows 3x 20x60..? any real difference?

    And any idea when your Interface will be back in stock..? It is the crowning glory to an independant build, I generally use my laptop with the BlackBox, and I always have to check for battery beforehand, or find my charger, so having this part an parcel I think is a really great move ;-)

    Wow just noticed today that the OX build has almost reached 1 million views! Amazing:thumbsup:


    Sure raise it up it will work fine. Just remember you not going to hog into the material, with most machines you will always take many shallow passes to achieve the cut depth

    Have a look at these motor mount plates - Threaded Rod Plate - NEMA 23 Stepper Motor or these Motor Mount Plate - NEMA 23 Stepper Motor
    To see if they will work for you if not remember its only aluminum you can always modify them by drilling cutting as needed.
    That being said once you have your OX up and running you can always cut a new plate that works specifically for your application.

    Its should be a 20x40, it's there to hold wires, your controller and provide a little more support for racking

    It will be back in stock in about two weeks and I can tell you from first hand experience you will love it, coming from a laptop.

    Of course! Shallow depths always, but I am hoping to do some 3D carving up to 8-9cm deep, so need some more headroom ;-) By the way, longer bits.. what would you recommend?

    Yeah, that threaded plate is what I have in Fusion at the moment, and it may be a problem... but can always modify ;-)

    OK, although I imagine 20x60 would work, only maybe could cause problems with the drag chain.. (too closed a radius may bring it too high)? I will be putting PSU and BB underneath front left/right corner, beneath spoilboard, and the Interface as shown in the video of first cut, hanging off a magnet just in front, so will be routing all wires thru the v-slot where possible, and thru v-slot channels where not possible to pass straight thru (except needed lengths of dragchain to allow axis movement)

    PD by the way, it would be great to have your latest products in Grabcad as step files... the skp files import to Fusion as STLs, and aren't very convenient for that app.. FWIW!! ;-)

    (BB, RoutER11, Interface, XYZ probe, etc)

    No need for STLs, Fusion can directly import Sketchup: Fusion 360 Help

    Unfortunately, when importing a .SKP the final BODY part is a STL mesh, not a solid, so the mesh cannot be manipulated like a solid (as well as looking ugly)... a .STEP would always be preferred! ;-)

    Well, the longest we have used are 6" and they were in foam for the Han Solo project
    They are called long reach and you can find the links under the main pic in the project here - Han Solo 3d Carving
    Not sure how well they will work in other materials but I will say use caution and make sure these are chucked in perfectly centered, otherwise they want to vibrate like crazy.

    I built the small OX, but cant figure out how to mount the Z limit in a good place of neatly. I am using the open builds extreme limit. anyone have a good solution & possibly a picture.

    Hi guys,

    I've got my first CNC machine on the weekend. I am totally new in this league. it has been quite a long week for me to study, understand and deal with it. Could you guys help me to sort out with couple of issues I'm having? Btw I still wasn't able to move the router yet :)

    It came with one cable broken side of the rack, and a couple of cables were out from the CNC shield as well!

    The wire that is off the switch you can just solder back on (power off of course).
    However, those drivers (CNC shield is made for 3D printers, a very light duty task) are just not capable of giving you the performance you deserve so I must recommend upgrading to a BlackBox.

    @kudret, I believe the point he is trying to make is that the drivers you are using for the system are grossly underpowered for the system you are trying to run. When the Ox came out many years ago that was all there was to work with but you should consider upgrading to something more current if you want a system with any oomph to it. The Blackbox is a good choice as it is largely plug and play. If you wish to stick with the Arduino you can always replace the shield/driver combo with individual drivers but ultimately these come back around to about the same cost as a Blackbox but require significantly more wiring.

    Basically, get rid of the Arduino CNC shield and replace it with Blackbox, and don't worry about the rest? :D

    I don't see a voltage on that power supply. is it 12v or 24v?

    As others have said the little 4988 drivers are only capable of about 1.2amps or so. while the motors need 2 to 3 amps to function correctly.

    So what you have will work but max speed and cutting speed will be limited by the motor power. This may be why the original owner sold it, disappointment in the performance (-:
    Simply and easily solved with a 24V power supply and a BlackBox.

    Of course there are other ways. Personally my OX has an Arduino and 4 DQ542 drivers which I did not have any trouble wiring up, but then my father was an amateur radio operator and I started soldering when I was about 6. Much easier to follow the BlockBox instructions at docs.openbuilds.com (-:

    *I* would get it moving and do some cutting, while planning the upgrade, and by planning I mean waiting for the delivery :)

    I followed your suggestion and upgrade CNC Shield and Power Supply. Replace CNC shield with xPro-V5, and upgrade power supply with 24V 350W

    It was quite easy to connect stepper motors to "xPro-V5" but I am struggling wiring "Limit Switchers" which there are 6 switchers install in my ox table x+, x-, y+ ,y-, z+, z- but there are only 3 connection in xPro-v5.

    There are 2 ways to connect:
    1 - connect the NO contacts of 2 switches in parallel for each of X Y and Z. the 2nd image at gnea/grbl
    2 - connect the NC contacts of 2 switches in series for each of X Y and Z. This requires inversion of the switch sensing in GRBL.
