If I want to use a V bit with this probe what do I set as the bit diameter? I am using a 60 degree V bit.
Use an accurately measured rod to probe X and Y whatever bit you are using. The flutes/cutting edges on a bit means you can't rely on getting an accurate probe on both X and Y. Then change to the bit and probe Z. Alex.
Thanks for the advice. I have decided to opt for a piece of 1/4 inch brass rod as I could not find any reasonably priced vermont gages in Australia - shipping from US was more expesive than the product!
That will work just fine. However, measure it with a caliper to be sure it is exactly 1/4 inch. If it isn't, use the value you measure and it will be as close to perfect as possible.
So my assumption is the probe is setting the zero point for x and y based on the middle of the 1/4 inch reference bit. If you set that and swap to the v-bit (and set the z axis accordingly), the point of v-bit should exactly hit the exact same point (where the middle of the 1/4 reference bit referenced earlier).
