You can.. and if your machine is 100% completely square.... probably won't be a problem. If you have wired the limit switches in parallel like it appears to be in your diagram, the machine does not know which limit switch is triggered on each axis (it just knows that one has been triggered). However, if the machine is not completely square, and the side of the axis with the broken limit switch is closer to the end of the the rails, it could in theory crash into it (but it would have to be out of square by a decent amount).

is it important that my cnc table must be on level? And also Ox table has 2 bridge in the middle and look like I won't be able to have a deep carving option. Is there any way to figure out depth cut size? can I move or remove the middle bridge support brackets?

Not really level BUT IT HAS TO BE 100% FLAT! You can't have one corner higher/lower than the others.
If your table is flat, as I said above, and you'll screw the frame to the table properly, then you could remove them.

The OX is an outdate model. Look for more up-to-date designs.

I know the Ox is old news but I hate to let it go to waste.
I built my Ox is March of 2015 and it's cut many projects for me with little issue. Since my last move 4 years ago, Ox has been collecting dust and my C-Beam XL is handling most of the work. However, I now have the need for a larger format machine but I'm over the belts and pulleys. My question is regarding linear rails vs linear rods and which is more suited for a machine of this type, I'll only be cutting wood on this machine. Are two linear rails on each side of the Y axis needed or would a single 20mm rail with two blocks work? My tool will be a simple router of some sort so no super heavy weight on the gantry.

I think whichever is cheaper overall. There is considerable cost and effort in the upgrade. I recently upgraded my workbee to linear rails, and it was over $500.

I use linear rods. I have one on each side of the Y axis and two on the X axis. Each rod has two carriages/blocks. I used the 16mm rods. Plenty strong and cheaper. Two rods per Y axis side may be better but I didn't want to make the machine taller than it is already.

I used linear rail like these from a different reseller. I have a modified ox customized in 2016. I am still doing the linear rail mod, but I chose to just use off the shelf Openbuilds plates and it is based on the LEAD High Z kit. I used aluminum angle to attach the rail blocks to the plates. As I said, it is still a work in progress.

I am getting to understand how to operate my ox machine. It is a good bargain for me to play with it :) Having great fun so far, drawing generative content, cutting generally soft timbers but its struggling to cutting melamine, other than that cool beginner machine.

Mark Carew, Being a total newbie myself about 3 years ago I bought a chinese 3040 to learn about cnc. Its was alright until I updated the firmware and it turn out to be a bad clone of the Plant CNC controller. So basically I was stuck with a controller that would not recognize the touch probe anymore. So I did some searching and come across this site and I posted the 1st time and Peter Van Der Walt turn me onto the black box. So I saved up my money and bought one including power supply.

I had it hook up to my 3040 down loaded the software and mess with the 3040. Well I wanted something bigger since I have a woodworking hobby and I wanted to make a some money to support my hobby since the price of wood went up and I am on a fixed income.

I watch your videos on your OX cnc build and I decided I will find a way to get the parts to build one> Come across a site called SPAM. They had a OX cnc mechanical kit 750mm x 750mm and I already had the NEMA 23 stepper motors and even with shipping it was over a $100 cheaper than buying all the parts separate. So I did a little more research and checking reviews and they seem on the up and up plus I used paypal for just incase. I have a makita 700 router to use on it. Just need to get some a few more stuff like the IOT switching relay power strip.

Hi, I just received a used OX 500x1000mm with all the four motors and the spindle (with 48V spindle power supply) but without any control electronics.
Can anyone suggest me the cheapest and easiset way to get it running?
I mean the control hardware and software.
I've heard of the black box thing and I'm sure it's great, but it's way over my budget right now.

I would really appreciate any help!
    Thanks, Carlo

At a minimum you will need an Arduino Uno and 4 proper stepper drivers as well as a 24 or 36V 350W power supply.

I've tried other systems if you can afford the black box then it is the easiest and best to set up the others are ok but yo will have to do more setup with the arduino

An Arduino uno ($20) plus 4 reliable DQ542ma stepper driver's ($38.99 each) are almost the cost of a black box. Then you need to figure out how to wire it and buy an enclosure to protect the electronic's. That is what I did for my first machine (pre-blackbox). It took me a lot of time to get it all running and work the bugs out. For my second machine I went with a black box and I think it took about 10 minutes to plug everything in and get it up and running

Thank you all for your aswers!

Could you please elaborate a little on what you mean by "reliable" stepper drive?

I already have an Arduino. My motors are rated at 3A/Phase (Nema 23 Wantai 57BYGH627).
I also have one of those parallel port cnc breakout boards around (to connect to a pc).

Do you think a set of cheaper motor drivers like the TB6600 could do the trick?
I'm really on a shoestring here...

Also, how would one control the spindle in an Arduino-based scenario?

To stay impartial, you'll have to use the Search bar above for others tales of cheap drivers. Especially warranties on those (none)
Just honest advice. Be careful of the "not enough money to buy the good stuff, but now I need to buy them twice".

PCs with parallel ports are hard to find these days. And the software toolchains mostly outdated (or difficult to setup if you go for Linuxcnc+lpt for example )

Good drivers are things like Wantai DQ542MAs, or a BlackBox.

A good Arduino comes from arduino.cc, Adafruit, SparkFun etc. Not the clones for a couple bucks that has a no name USB chip that chokes on the amount of data Grbl has to process while you are streaming gcode :) - causing symptoms that look like EMI, while we all help you try to diagnose your EMI issues only for you to admit several weeks later that it was a clone all along (based on true stories)

A bare Arduino lack the frontend circuitry and filtering a BlackBox provides too. You want to spend days building endstop filters on perfboard? What if you need a 0-10v signal for a spindle? Have you got the skillset to build a pwm to 0-10v converter? Its all included in a BlackBox (and much much more) besides being a tonne easier to wire (time is not free)

We see it all the time. Eventually, they tend to come back and get the BlackBox after the tears :)

I definitely was not referring to TB6600 when I said "reliable" since a significant percentage of the time they are not real TB6600 drivers that you receive. They are just packaged to look like it and are a cheaper driver. Which is why you can find TB6600 drivers so cheap.

Post a picture and we'll be able to tell you, or compare to the pictures of the Workbee and Ox respectively

    Hi all,

My OXCNC has been running reliably for years, know it's out of date, but the old dog hasn't let me down yet.... ;)

I was just upgrading to the latest version of UGS and it all seems to work except when I manually move the x,y,z axes it moves in a weird stuttery way - ie instead of moving smoothly 10cm, it moves in hundreds of tiny increments - it also moves waaaay slower.

It feels like some sort of setting needing tweaked?!

What was the jogging feed rate? Is that adjustable in UGS? It may have been set real slow.

Sorry for the daft question, is this under $$ in UGS? I can't recall seeing it

I may be the daft one. I assumed that you could change the jogging feed in the UGS GUI. But I just looked at the github page and could not easily see how to do that. I am not familiar with how you change it in UGS, or have a slider to speed it up or down. Other gcode senders have the ability to type in a feed rate for jogging in the GUI.

Ah right, I might try openbuilds then - not wedded to UGS, slightly strange they wouldn't have this built in?!

Hi guys ive just stepped into the world of desktop cnc, i know its old but ive just purchased an Ox , the guy who i had it off as added some strange wooden parts to it. Is there anywere i can get pics or a build page to see how this should look. Do i need to know anything about it before i start learning ie upgrades ?. the Z up n down are very noisy i.e. vibrating so not sure what that is yet
