Hi I have a standard Workbee 1000x1000. Works well. I now want to do a lot of aluminium work (building a telescope mount.). I am considering doing a quenbe upgrade to improve aluminium cutting speeds. It occurred to me that perhaps I might be better building an additional machine that was ultimately better at this - perhaps something smaller and hence potentially more rigid. Are any of the Openbuilds machines likely to produce better/faster results than the quenbe, or should I stick with upgrading my current machine which is fitted with an 800 watt water cooled spindle? Thank you Gary
The smaller you go the less flexure there is in the beams and the more rigid the system is able to become. Figure out what size you need and work from there. Trying to retrofit a large system to make it stiffer is definitely not the way to go.
I need no more than 350mm x 350mm cutting area... Any suggested builds for this that are known to be good at aluminium? thanks Gary
You might look at Sphinx 55 on MGN12 linear rails | OpenBuilds. That's a good stout build. Dropping the X-axis down as much as possible would make it even stiffer.
