Since Autodesk sells AutoCAD for about $4000 a year, I have been trying to use AutoCAD compatible software such as IntelliCAD but these programs give me problems. Autodesk stopped offering free software for people who are not students. Fusion 360 doesn't import DWG files. Any suggestions?

QCAD or LibreCAD? But DWG is their proprietary format so won't find many applications willing to pay Autodesks license fees to use it. Let the AutoCAD guy who draws the DWGs save it as DXFs

Fusion 360 can import DXF and mesh files. I thought that Fusion 360 can't import DWG files but I found out that I have to upload DWG files to their website (I think). They create files and download them to Fusion 360. I think that I can't edit these files.

I too faced the Autodesk increased cost based on their new subscription model. I researched and found approximately 7 alternatives -
    Nanocad
    Shapr3D
    Sketchpad
    BricsCAD
    LibreCAD
    CMS Intellicad
    ProgeCAD
I settled on using Nanocad and CMS Intellicad with solid modeling package - both options will open my dwg files dating back to Acad ver.12 etc.
Please take note - CMS Intellicad offered an option to purchase the program on CD/DVD with a USB Key - very handy for the laptop that remains offline.
    Regards,
    Albert

I think that CMS Intellicad is the best AutoCAD compatible software.
