I am making a metal chassis with mgh guides. my last question is What torque do I need in the motors? the dimensions of my machine are: 3 m X 2.4m I have thought about installing some nema 23 with 3NM of torque, but I am worried that it will be little torque I will really appreciate your help
Torque is transmitted through a screw to become a linear force. Force you need to push a cutting tool through a material. That screw also has a transmission efficiency based on its friction and pitch. Also, force = mass x acceleration. Your gantry has a mass and you want to accelerate it at... What rate? Motors also have an inductance, which is basically magnetic inertia- willingness to change speed rapidly. Nothing to do with acceleration force, but will affect your acceleration. Motors also have torque and power curves- the torque changes depending on how fast you're running the motors. How much torque do you need, and then at what speed do you need it? You might need more peak torque than you think if you're running mostly at higher speeds. This is a surprisingly big rabbit hole to go down... Expect to be researching this for several weeks if you want to come up with really solid numbers with a firm understanding.
