Spindle deflection issue

    I just added some height to my cbeam (Lead Style) CNC machine to be able to handle thicker pieces.

    running a job that is vcarving and then cutting through oak (3/4 inch).

    The v carve worked flawlessly but about halfway through the profile cut (with 1/8 end mill bit ) my spindle “caught” as it cutting on the round/arc . It was almost like the spindle went off balance and it dug out a chunk along the radius and then straightened out. Is this likely due to the higher frame needing to be stiffer or ? Happened twice in the exact same spot. Had to abort the job.

    Checkout the right way to do that: High Z Mod for Lead CNC

    Extra length = extra leverage.

    Also make sure its Trammed properly

    Extra length also equals extra flexibility. And then combining the two, extra leverage + extra flexibility = poorer results.

    For best results keep your system as low to the deck as you possibly can. On a two beam system like the High-Z mod, keep the lower beam as low as you can for the work you do. Also helps to put the drive motor on the lower beam. This helps reduce flexure on the Z-axis as well as the vertical gantry framing.

    Thanks folks. I thought it might be something like that. Kind of jarring when it happens. I will have to inspect my spindle really closely. Hopefully I didn't bend the shaft or anything.
