Thanks for sharing! Having the drag chain on the bottom seems to work well.

I am thinking the nut block for the Z will need to be on the bottom as well. Need to check the hole alignment and see if that will work.

I am wondering if that will work in the configuration that has the beam moving instead of just router moving up and down like this:



My suspicion is that having the nut block nearer all the weight (on the bottom plate) would be the best way to go.

 

In my configuration the Z beam is fixed and the Z gantry moves on it. Putting the nut near the weight makes sense. You don't tend to need much speed out of the Z axis. In my experience the Y axis is most likely to bind as there are two gantries that can rack, and then the X axis if you push it too fast. I've never had a Z axis bind before (unless I accidentally bottom it out!).

Will this high Z mod work on the Workbee 1510?

 

I've been trying now for the last few days to get hold of someone that sells Lead CNC 1000 x 1000 High Z which seems to be quite difficult here in Europe. I would, however, like to start a discussion about how it would be possible to extend the Y axis by 2500 mm. The width of 1000 mm and the high Z axis is absolutely perfect in terms of a set up for what we need for cutting out a EPS foam Cores however, we really need the length and see that a few people have done this already from some of the discussions.

1. Where can I buy a lead 1000 x 1000 high Z machine from in Europe?
2. Has anyone had experience extending the Y axis by up to 2 1/2 meters

I really am very interested in making this work as our business has come to a standstill due to the high impact costs of overpriced CNC's this has put us in a desperate situation and we are very very eager to keep ourselves going.

If not, the LEAD platform is 100% off the shelf modular parts, so any distributor with C-Beam plates and C-Beams should be able to whip one up from the BOM

That would be trickier - leadscrews top out at 1500 (longer would suffer whip issues) - so would require re-engineering to use belts, or rack and pinion. Not impossible, but prepare to plan it our in CAD and come up with clever ideas to counter the negatives of a larger machine
- drive system (belt, rack and pinion, alternative larger screws, etc
- deflection / sag (strong torsion box table underneath for example)

Thank you for your responce. We are more than happy to go with the belt drive on the Y axis as long as we can keep the Z axis as well as the X axis as featured on the lead 1000 x 1000.

This was where we were hoping to speak with a local European supplier that could help us do the modifications in order to make sure that we have everything we need. However, getting hold of someone in Europe that is dedicated full-time to helping us with that seems to be our main issue right now. We based in Germany but not finding anyone that can help is directly.

I inverted the Z-axis by ordering another plate and some wheels. I used the corner connectors and the old side extrusion to hold the plates together. I need to cut the extrusion to size, but it seems to work pretty good so far.

Do they sell a double XL cbeam gantry plate? Having one plate on the front would make it even more rigid I think.

 

Did you try to contact OpenBuilds store and ask them? I'm sure they'll accommodate you.
