I've been using my Open Builds CNC for a number of years. Recently I did an upgrade to the new Black Box controller and also a spindle/VFD. I have decided that I wanted to add a laser cutter to my shop. I am trying to decide if I want to go with a dedicated machine or add a Diode Head to my CNC.

A few years ago I purchased a cheap 5 watt diode head with driver electronics. I have verified that this device is in working condition. I have included a pic of the head and driver electronics. I would like to fool around with this a little before deciding on what option to go with. My intent is to go with probably a 30-40 watt head. I am also using Vcarve Pro 12 and intend on getting the laser addon to use at least initially.

Please reference the attached picture. On the top of the driver 2 wires go to the laser and 2 wires go to the cooling fan. On the bottom left there is a 3 pin connector for 12 volts and PWM. The 2 pin connector on the right is labeled PWM/TTL. Referencing the documentation for the Black Box controller am I correct in assuming that the ground from the Black box would be connected to the ground from the laser power supply? Also the PWM from the Black Box would connect with the PWM wire in the left connector? The left connector would be left empty as shown in the picture. If all the connections are correct are there any additional hardware configurations required in the Black Box? Is a new post processor required to support the laser?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

See Section 3.3.2 "Connecting BlackBox X32 to a 12v Laser Module" of the BlackBox documentation docs:blackbox-x32:connect-3-wire-laser [OpenBuilds Documentation]

Shared GND between PWM and seperate 12v PSU (Controller runs on 24v, laser needs 12v from seperate supply), just make very very sure of polarity (wiring 12v+ to GND or PWM will kill the BlackBox and not be covered under warranty)

You'll typically want to use a laser CAM like Lightburn docs:software:overview [OpenBuilds Documentation]
