This isn't a fully processed thought, but I figure I'd post here and see what come of it. I have a Haas VF-2 and can pretty much make any of the machinable parts in the OpenBuilds catalog. I also have experience having custom aluminum extrusions made through my normal work (we do product design, engineering, prototyping and manufacturing). I have used OpenBuilds for many projects and, while I understand the predicament, hate to see them go. The thought here is to, perhaps, take orders for plates and other items we might be able to make in batches and support the community in this manner. Like I said, this is not fully thought out. Call it an idea at this point. It isn't financially viable to make just a few of anything. It would probably have to be done in lots of 100 or more pieces. There's programming, fixturing, finishing and labor involved. With regards to C-Beam and V-Slot linear rail, as I said, I have experience with custom extrusions. Once you get past the cost of the die, validation, etc., there are a few companies in the US that will run small batches (if I remember correctly, 50 to 200 lbs of aluminum). Once again, the plan would be to do all the work to be able to run batches, take orders and run the batches when they are fully sold. There might be additional restrictions, for example, it might only make sense to sell them in 6 ft. lengths, etc. The final comment is about the legal framework. This is where OpenBuilds would have to weigh in. Is what I am proposing OK with you? Is there IP that could encumber this approach? As far as electronics is concerned, well, we also do electronics. However, the above is probably as much complexity as I would want to take on at this time. OK, that's it. -Martin
Just chiming in to say I've run Haas VF-2s before. They are more than able to do this type of work. If you're able to work something out, let us know.
We have other machines, but this is the only one I could dedicate to this idea. Also, it's in my garage, so I can properly separate business from this work.
